When we visited the zoo the lioness were very busy staking out the red pandas in the enclosure opposite them. They hang on every move they made making the best of their advantage point high in a tree. While the girls were thinking about how to get lunch the male lion lazed in the sun.
Zookeepers provide daily animal feeds and keeper talks. This gives visitors the opportunity to interact with a knowledgeable person and learn more about the species.

The five African Lions are a new addition to Adelaide's zoo. For a long time we only had sampson who was quite a personality. He was most famous for backing his butt up to the cage and spraying tourists in urine. Thankfully the new guys dont seem to have this bad habit. The new lion enclosure has an open space for them to run as well as a area with shade.

Macaws Freeflight Display happens at 1pm daily at Adelaide zoo. They use Blue and Gold Macaws which fly from tree to tree for tidbits. They are very pretty birds with bright plumage. It takes place on the Central Lawns where most people picnic at the zoo. These stunning birds are on the brink of extinction so if you can pop your spare change in tin at the end of the show.

The penguins have an enclosure that is inspired by the Kangaroo Island coastline. They have a little beach in front of their swimming pool. At the back there are rocks that serve as nesting boxes. Each day the keeper gives a talk whilst feeding them fish. They are very cute. Because they are hand red they will only take fish from the keeper's hand. Fish that fall to the floor are ignored. The penguins breed so well at the zoo that they have to sabotage the eggs by pin pricking them so they don't get over run with little penguins.

The new orangutan enclosure theme is lowland rainforest cleared of vegetation for logging. Orangutans in the wild live high in the rainforest trees so the enclosure includes two high towers with a joining ropes. A third tower allows the orangutan to enter the near by Sumatran tiger exhibit but does not allow them to descend to the floor. The orangutans will also share their home with Siamangs and Langurs. Adelaide Zoo’s Orangutan and Sumatran Tigers are genetically crucial to worldwide breeding programs.

The exhibit is themed as a lowland rainforest, with a clearing to the front. Main features include a small water body, raised ground level for eye-to-eye viewing. Unfortunately they weren't swimming when I visited. The keepers include enrichment devices, like bungee-cord feeders, to keep the tigers lives interesting. Sumatran Orangutans high in the tree canopy will overlook Sumatran Tigers prowling the forest floor.
The Sumatran Tiger is the smallest of the tigers. In the wild they live a solitary life. They are seriously endangered. A substantial fraction of the wild Sumatran tiger population lives in unprotected areas containing altered habitats, such as oil palm plantations.

George the orangutan was given to Adelaide zoo when he was 3 by the government of Sarawak. He was love by many for his playful nature and his sense of humour. His cage was very small and made of concrete with only a rubber tyre for company - it was a different time. Thankfully the are no more cages like this anymore. In front of George's cage there was a playground. I remember him fondly. One day while the keeper was cleaning his cage George took the hose and sprayed us all! When he wasn't swinging he would sit with his legs and arms crossed. It was very sad when he passed away it is wonderful that the zoo has monument to keep his memory alive.

Adelaide Zoo has two female gorillas which have arrived from Taronga Zoo. Anguka is 11yrs old and her sister Safiri in 9yrs. The apes will be staying in Adelaide for only afew months before heading off to their new home overseas. Adelaide Zoo has agreed to support the captive management program by temporally providing accommodation for these two young females who have reached sexual maturity and need to move to an unrelated family group, just as they would in the wild.

The zoo has a great section for the kids where they can get up close to some of the animals. Its decorated with colourful paintings, mosaics, a pond with its own large frog statue, activities area and nursery. The Kids can explore the zoo by looking through windows, over fenced pens and also interacting with animals that are freely moving around the petting area. The focus is educational through play. The kids zoo also has its own eating area.
