On the basis to the 3 main rivers that Adelaide gets its water supply, it was officilised in 1963 by the Duke of Edinburgh and commemorates Queen Elizabeth II visit to Adelaide.

    National / Conservation Parks: Warrawong
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dr. John Wamsley bought Warrawong wishing to repair the damage done by 100 years of intensive farming and keen to attract native animals. After buying the old dairy farm he set about working on the revegetation of the area. Dr. Wamsley designed and built the vermin proof fence that surrounds Warrawong. This was the first vermin free area on mainland Australia.

Warrawong has not only native vegetation and native birds, but also Rufous Bettongs, Long-nosed Potoroos, Woylies, Southern Brown Bandicoots, Bilbies,Tammar Wallabies, Platypus and the endangered Eastern Quoll.

At Warrawong you can participate in guided adventure walks, education programs or to enjoy the unique accommodation and restaurant facilities.

The Sanctuary has 85 acres of protected flora and fauna. It is somewhere not to be missed by visitors to Adelaide and Australia itself.
Warrawong also has accommodation facilities and offers a very different holiday experience for its guests.

City Parklands: Rose parks across the city
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rose gardens can be found across the City but some of the special places be found at Veale Gardens, Rymill Park, Pennington Gardens, Brougham Gardens, and the Lady Ester Lipman Gardens.

One of my favourite parks is the Heritage Rose Gardens on the northern bank of the River Torrens, near the Adelaide Zoo.

Decided to go to Barossa for the Queens bday hols as I needed a breather away from work.

Barossa is around an hours drive away from Adelaide. SA is the major wine growing state and Barossa being the main area for grape cultivation and wine making.

Depending on whether you take a tour or go on your own, a wine tour usually has sampling a wide range of reds, whites and fortified wines.

This pic was at Langmeil Wines - and the vines behind is one of the oldest vines in the region - being more tha 140 years old.

Clare Valley - The Wine Region

Clare is a just one of South Australia’s wine producing regions. If you’re a fan of wine and food you should absolutely include Clare in your plans (alongside the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the Coonawarra region).

The wine region is a great retreat, be it as a romantic getaway, or to simply escape.

The Clare Valley is an acclaimed wine region producing premium wines and also many fine restaurants. The picturesque scenery is stunning all year round, so visitors can enjoy the region at any time of year.

For those not interested in wine the region has a number of historical townships and places to explore for nature lovers.

Burra, to the East of the region, is one of Australia's most historic copper-mining towns. There is lots of wonderful "Aussie" scenery and off the beaten track adventures to be had.

Kapunda and the South are areas relatively untouched by modern development. These rural townships make for charming daytrips. In this area of The Clare Valley you can discover the rich pastoral & mining heritage of the region. Peaceful & tranquil, it really is a different side of Australia rarely seen by most tourists

Cleland Conservation Park: Wildlife Parks - Cleland
  • Tip Rating:
  • "Just 12 kilometres from Adelaide City centre, Cleland Conservation Park conserves a vital area of natural bushland on the Adelaide Hills face and includes the internationally popular Cleland Wildlife Park, the viewing platform of Mt Lofty Summit and scenic Waterfall Gully. The area has a rich history of Aboriginal occupation and European settlement.

Within its 1,000 hectares, Cleland Conservation Park offers visitors a variety of walking trails that provide fascinating insights into the diverse wildlife and cultural heritage of the area. Vegetation on the higher slopes is predominantly stringybark forest with a complex understorey of small trees and shrubs. The lower woodlands on the northern side of the Park contain significant stands of Blue Gum and Manna Gum which give way to open grasslands.

Cleland Wildlife Park is a must-see attraction and photo opportunity for visitors from all over the world. Here you come face-to-face and hands-on with Australia's unique wildlife and can join animal attendants on the animal feed runs from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm daily or discover the world of nocturnal animals on a guided nightwalk. Bookings (61 8) 8339 2444 are essential for the nightwalks. The Yurridla Trail, offers a chance to hear Aboriginal guides bring to life their Dreaming stories and explain the inseparable relationship between Aboriginal culture and Australian wildlife.

Picturesque Waterfall Gully offers visitors a variety of bushwalking opportunities, spectacular waterfalls and ideal picnic spots."

    (Cleland website)

Driving from the city, take Glen Osmond Road to the South Eastern Freeway. Exit at Crafers and turn left at the roundabout. Follow Summit Road (Mt Lofty Scenic Route) to the Cleland turn-off.

Art Gallery of South Australia: The Art Gallery of South Australia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although technically free, a small donation is requested for the gallery. This is surprising in itself given the number and quality of the works presented. My thanks to the South Australian taxpayer, I guess. The museum has diverse and categorized sections dealing with each era of the local history, as well as Aboriginal, extra-regional, Asian, and European art. You could potentially spend several days here. I would stack this collection up against all but a handful of art museums in Europe and North America. The museum is immaculately cared for, carefully explained, and meticulously presented. Somehow, despite showing many different forms of art, they manage to keep the motif Australian and somewhat regional, keenly keeping my interest.

An easy way to do the Barossa Valley is to drive north through North Adelaide and catch the A1 and then the A20. Follow the signs from there. The wineries have maps of the area so use any of them as an information kiosk. Remember, five samples equal a glass, two glasses equal drunken driving in Australia. The drive should take a little more than half an hour, maybe 45 minutes.
