Elder Park, Adelaide

Take a short boat trip on the Torrens River with the famous little Popeyes. The boats depart from Elder Park and take you first to the weir and then towards the zoo where you can disembark if you such purchased a one-way ticket. Otherwise the boat returns to Elder Park.
Return ticket are 9 AU$ and the tour takes roughly one hour.

Elder Park is a park area in the north end the city. Through Elder Park runs the mighty River Torrens; in nice weather people take paddleboat rides up and down the river.

There are lots of free/public festivals and events held in Elder Park through the year, so if you're lucky and come on the right day, it's all action. Otherwise, it's a nice, quiet grassy area with pelicans, black swans, and ducks.

With the city and the distinctive Festival Theatre behind it, this is a key place instantly recognisable as Adelaide - the main scene featuring on Adelaide's postcards.

Elder Park is in the heart of Adelaide. Its a gorgeous park, that is adjacent to the River Torrens.
From Elder Park,you can do a cruise aboard Popeye. This boat holds approximately 20 passengers, and travels from Elder Park to the Adelaide Zoo. Its a relaxing way to see the River
Elder Park also is the place to hire a paddle boat and have some fun. The boats are readily available from the walkway next to the river.
If a paddle boat is not your scene, then pushbikes are available for hire at the same place. There is a bikeway that runs the length of the park.
The Festival Centre offers a backdrop to the park...An hour or two can be spent exploring here. Its worth a visit.
There is something for everyone here...A relaxing time in the middle of the city!!!!

Elder Park is located on the slopes of the south bank of the Torrens Lake, adjacent the Adelaide Festival Center.

The Rotunda in Elder Park was erected in 1882.

Popeye launches leave from a landing stage in the Park for a 20 minute cruise upstream to the zoo or you can hire a paddleboat. Bicycle hire is also available.

There are a number of walking tracks in and around the city area, providing beautiful views of the lake, its wildlife and the city. The park is host to many community events including Carols by Candlelight, Symphony under the Stars and the Adelaide Festival of Arts.

The river is named after Colonel Robert Torrens, one of the founders of Adelaide.. Torrens Lake was created in 1881 with the construction of a weir, landscaping of Elder park and modification of the river’s bank and surrounds into an English formal park. The lake forms a centerpiece of many Adelaide events. The sign at the lake says

Elder Park with its iron rotunda was opened on 28 November 1882.

You can take a little boat called Popeye up to the Weir. The sign on the Weir Gates says.

Popeye is a small cruise boat that travels along the river Torrens. Its a 40 minute cruise with commentary. Its very popular with the children of Adelaide. Most of us Adelaidians have fond memories of taking the Popeye to the Adelaide zoo.

The Boat departs from outside the festival theatre.

Summer timetable September to May Cruises depart on the hour Monday to Friday and approximately every 20 minutes on weekends, school and public holidays.

Elder park...... Many a good time has been had here.
First, it is a large lawned area just a short walk from the city centre. Take a rug, and have a picnic, then let the kids spend some time on the Paddle boats while you are enjoying listening to the Band playing in the old Bandstand. Pop-Eye the Boat leaves from here and goes to the Adelaide Zoo.

Then, there are all the events held here, like Carols by Candlelight, Food & Wine Festivals and more, there is always something going on here. Check the Advertiser paper for details.
The Adelaide Rowing Club has its sheds on the Torrens, so you often see Rower's practising.

The Park is located next to the Festival Centre.

The small tour boats on Adelaide's river Torrens have been called Popeye for many years. The trip to the zoo on Popeye is a popular outing.
