Dr. John Wamsley bought Warrawong wishing to repair the damage done by 100 years of intensive farming and keen to attract native animals. After buying the old dairy farm he set about working on the revegetation of the area. Dr. Wamsley designed and built the vermin proof fence that surrounds Warrawong. This was the first vermin free area on mainland Australia.

Warrawong has not only native vegetation and native birds, but also Rufous Bettongs, Long-nosed Potoroos, Woylies, Southern Brown Bandicoots, Bilbies,Tammar Wallabies, Platypus and the endangered Eastern Quoll.

At Warrawong you can participate in guided adventure walks, education programs or to enjoy the unique accommodation and restaurant facilities.

The Sanctuary has 85 acres of protected flora and fauna. It is somewhere not to be missed by visitors to Adelaide and Australia itself.
Warrawong also has accommodation facilities and offers a very different holiday experience for its guests.

  • A BEAUTIFUL beach populated only by locals. And when the sea is rough (it was) and/or cold (it was also...) you can bath in the Glenelg River which is wide, calm and warmed by the sun rays.
A delight. The nicest beach between Adelaide and Melbourne I would say...

  • An incredible number of 'mutton birds' come back from the sea to their nests at sunset. Mutton birds are really skilled gliders who travel 15'000 km on their yearly migration over the pacific till the Aleoutian!
