    VINEYARDS & WINDMILLS

    Windmill amongst the vines

As you drive around the clare valley, visiting many vineyards and seeing many vineyards, you will also see the smaller size windmills in amongst the Vines. The Clare valley is quite cold, and the windmill is set going when frosts are expected. It is hoped the current of moving air, will stop the vines from being burnt with frost.

    ALPACA'S & SHEEP

    Alpaca looking after his Sheep

Sheep farming is also important in the Clare Valley.

What we saw, were a number of Alpaca's in amongst flock's of Sheep. Farmers have realized that the Alpaca is a good guardian, and will look after "their" adopted herd, chasing predators like Foxes away, even trying to stomp on the Fox!

Alpaca's bond with grazing animals easily, making it a life-long relationship. More and more Farmers are buying Alpaca's to protect sheep and goats, especially at lambing time when many Foxes are around looking for an easy feed.

    Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend

by tigerjapan Written Nov 3, 2007

Okay, okay this isn't really a local custom, but the Clare Valley Gourmet weekend is a tradition that has been running in Clare since 1985. It's usually held in May (2007 was May 5th & 6th).
The South Australia Tourism website states; "The Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend was the first of its kind in Australia and our pioneering group of local winemakers continue their innovative approach to food and wine" each year for an entire weekend in May.
There are vintage tastings, local products, restaurants with special menus and entertainment. It's a great weekend and one worth taking part in if you happen to be in South Australia when it's on.
