If you really want, you can fly into Coober Pedy these days. There are daily flights (probably departing from Adelaide). This will only save you a couple of days driving though and of course is much more expensive...

For once, this time I'm recommending you DON'T try to drive yourself to this place (of course you can if you want...but..it's further away from anywhere than you think.)
It's a good 850 kms north of Adelaide (and about another 850 south of Ayers Rock with only a small fuel stop town in between)
Travelling for days through the desert is monotonous and very tiring (and I WAS on a bus!) The landscape changes very little. On a bus at least you can sleep and relax, and once you get to Coober Pedy, you don't need transport as you can walk the town and catch a mini tour just to see the mine workings.
