Signs in Coober Pedy forbid the usually jovial sport of running or walking backwards. Actually, it's quite serious. Due to haphazard opal mining all over town, there are unmarked mining shafts everywhere - and at seven stories down, you don't want to trip.

It's not a good idea to go wandering about the mining area (just outside of town) by yourself. For one reason, it's dangerous with all the deep shafts.
For another, the miners certainly won't want you hanging around fossicking (hoping to find good discarded opal chips)
If you take a mini-tour, chances are you may be able to take some small stones with a little colour as souvenirs (ones which are worthless for jewellery)
