Gringo's Mexican Cantina is, as its name suggests, a Mexican restaurant in the beach resort of Glenelg.
It is located on Colley Terrace, just a few metres from Jetty Road and Moseley Square. The long sandy beach is just a 2 minute walk away.
It offers an indoor dining area as well as a handful of outdoor tables with views of Moseley Square. I ate here on a hot and sunny day in April 2006, so I sat outdoors with my meal.
As well as eating at the restaurant, you can also order take-away food. Below is a selection of meals from the take-away menu (note: the eat-in menu is a little more extensive....and a little more expensive....than the take-away menu):
Taco ($4) - tortilla filled with lettuce, onions, cheese, salsa and a choice of beef, chicken, frijole or chilli con carne;
Gringo's Nachos ($10) - corn chips with refried beans, cheese, salsa, guacamole and sour cream;
Burrito ($9) - soft flour tortilla with refried beans, salad, salsa and a choice of beef, chicken, frijole or chilli con carne;
Chilli con carne - with corn chips ($8), with Mexican rice ($8) or with both ($10);
Guacemole dip ($8.50) - avocado blended with tomatoes, onions and herbs. served with corn chips;
Salsa dip ($7) - spicy tomato dip with chilli, capsicum and coriander. Served with corn chips.
Frijole (bean) ($7) - hot bean dip. Served with corn chips.

Taquitos ($8) - beef rolled in a crispy corn tortilla. Served with salad, salsa and sour cream;
Con Queso ($9) - hot spicy cheese dip. Served with corn chips.
Favorite Dish:
I opted for:
Gringo's Nachos - Cost: $15
A large plate of nachos with melted cheese, refried beans, guacamole, sour cream and salsa. Every bit as nice as the nachos I'd been eating in Mexico a few weeks before my trip to Australia!
The same meal would have cost me just $10 to take away, but I imagine the portion would have been smaller.
Bottle of Cooper's Lager - Cost: $5.50

I opted for:
2 small fish and chips - Cost: 4.95 AUD
The fish were not small at all.....certainly not be British standards! I got two large battered and boneless fish, a decent sized portion of chips and lots of salt.
As there are no tables inside the Bay Fish Shop, I enjoyed my fish and chips on a bench outside.
Good value fish and chips near the beach!
Andersen's Ice Cream is a Danish ice cream shop located on busy Jetty Road in the beach resort of Glenelg. It is located just a few minutes walk inland from the beach.
As you would expect, Andersen's offers a large selection of ice cream flavours, to be enjoyed in either a cone or a tub. Some of the flavours that I noted were:
- mint choc chip;
- cookies and cream;
- boysenberry;
- frozen yoghurt;
- coffee;
- lemon sorbet;
- banana fudge.
Extra toppings (cream, various syrups, raspberries...) are free.
As well as ice cream, Andersen's also sells hotdogs and a few other hot and cold snacks.
Favorite Dish:
I opted for:
A regular cone with 2 scoops of ice cream - Cost: 5.50 AUD
I chose "Baileys with scorched almonds" and "Belgian chocolate chip" flavoured ice creams. I enjoyed my cone while walking along the pier on a breezy evening in April 2006.
A large selection of Danish ice cream on Jetty Road!
Glenelg Spices is a Malay / Thai restaurant located on Jetty Road, the main shopping, dining and entertainment street in the beach resort of Glenelg.
I ate here one evening during my visit to Glenelg in April 2006.
The interior is comfortable but simple, with wooden tables and chairs and a complete lack of table decor. That is fine with me, so long as the food is good I don't particularly care how well set the table is!
The menu consists mainly of stir frys and curries. Take your pick from chicken, beef, prawns, kangaroo or vegetarian. I was tempted to try one of the kangaroo based curries, but I couldn't bring myself to do it!
The number of red chillis by the name of the dish on the menu indicates how hot and spicy it is.
The service was friendly and relatively quick.
Favorite Dish:
I opted for:
Chilli Chicken - Cost: 12.90 AUD
This dish scores an impressive 4 chillis on the hot scale! Having deliberately ordered one of the hottest dishes on the menu, I was looking for a dish with a real kick to it.....and it didn't disappoint! The strength of the chilli sauce wasn't initially apparent, but it kicked in with a vengeance part way through my meal. The stir fry consisted of tender pieces of chicken with red chillis, brocolli, mange tout, bamboo shoots, mushrooms and onions in a chilli sauce.
Jasmine steamed rice - Cost: 1.30 AUD
A small portion of white rice.
Coopers Sparkling Ale (375ml bottle) - Cost: 5.50 AUD
A somewhat fizzy lager that had a tendency to react with the strong chillis in my stir fry to create a burning sensation in my mouth. Not the ideal accompaniment to a hot stir fry! In hindsight, I should have ordered water.
Excellent spicy dishes on Jetty Road. Highly recommended!!
Noodle Box is, as its name suggests, a restaurant selling mainly noodle based dishes.
It is located on Jetty Road, the bustling main stretch of shops and restaurants in the beach resort of Glenelg near Adelaide.
I ate here on my first ever day in Australia in April 2006. The service was very friendly and efficient.
The menu includes a number of noodle and rice dishes. The following is a sample of the menu:
"Noodles That Wok"
KT Box 10.30 AUD - with roast pork, shrimp, capsicum, onions in sweet soy and chilli sauce.
Sing-a Box 10.30 AUD - with pork, shrimp, bean shoots, shallots in a mild curry sauce.

Hot Box 11.50 AUD - with pork, chicken, beef and fresh vegetables in chilli sauce.
Black Belt Box 9.90 AUD - with pork, shrimps, capsicum, bean shoots in a soy and chilli sauce.

Favorite Dish:
.
Daily, between 11:30am and 4pm, you can take advantage of the Lunch Box offer - a choice of various of the above boxes for just 7.50 AUD each.
For kids, there are Little Ninja Boxes (smaller versions of the above boxes) available at 6.90 AUD each.
You can have food delivered to your home or hotel at a charge of 3 AUD (daily: 6pm - 9pm)
I opted for:
Hot Box - Cost 11.50 AUD
Thin egg noodles with pork, chicken, beef and fresh vegetables blended with a secret chilli sauce. It was served in a large bowl and was very tasty. However, the chilli sauce could certainly have been hotter!
Coca Cola (600ml bottle) - Cost 2.50 AUD
A good selection of noodles in a friendly noodle bar on Jetty Road.
Pub downstairs and restaurant upstairs. This place is only a few months old. The location is incredible, with a view from the upstairs and downstairs balconies of the beach, jetty, final tram stop and Moseley Square. Great spot for people watching!
Only downside of this place is that it does not have a great deal of atmosphere, probably due to the horribly sleepy music (slightly on the country side) they played each time we went in there. The decor is wonderful, so I hope they get smart about the music they play since it has so much potential to become a place with a great night life.
For avid sports fans, this pub has heaps of large screen TVs tuned in to various sports channels.
Stop by for drinks and to watch the sunset before going to dinner at Scampis.
Favorite Dish:
It has been a while since I ate there. When we did eat there it was before the full service restaurant openned so we got a couple appetizers. The beef bruscetta was excellent. The full menu seems like your average Irish Pub fare, similar to Shennanigans at Marion.
I have used Yakumi for catering an event for 200 people and they were fantastic!! Very competetive prices and excellent feedback from my guests!! We eat at the restaurant every so often since it just down the street from our flat. Also check out my tip about Spices if you like Malaysian and Thai food!
Favorite Dish:
All of their food is amazing! You MUST finish your meal with the fried icecream with cointreau poured over the top ... it cost $7.50, but it is SO worth double that price!!! YUMM!
The food here is incredible!! The restaurant is a bit small-ish, so if you plan to have dinner on a Friday or Saturday night, be sure to book ahead (even if you ring the same day). They sell booze or you can bring your own booze, but they charge a small corkage fee. Also ... if you like Japanese food, check out my tip for Yakumi, which is right next door to Spices.
Favorite Dish:
Chargrilled chicken is just delicious!! Second favorite is Peppered pork. Always be sure to get an order or two of Roti Chanai with curry sauce ... it is to die for!!! Sometimes we just buy the Roti and curry sauce to take home as an appetizer before dinner at home. LOVE IT!
Along Jetty Road there are lots of cafees and restaurants, you can have food from every corner of the world. We ate at the Stamford Grand Hotel once, too, and it was perfectly all right. But we absolutely preferred the outdoor serving at one of the many cafes, watching the tram go to and from :-)
My brother took us to Scampi's for dinner. He siad that the place was one of the best seafood restaurants that he had been to. The restaurant was upstairs on the beachfront just near the Pier. They had big open windows overlooking the sea and I was set for a great evening. Although the restaurant was not packed out it was still busy. The staff were not as friendly or attentive as I had thought they should be in such an establishment. The atmosphere was quite flat also. We waited for our meals for over an hour and when we received them they really were the corner fish and chip shop standard. Two of the boys had Oysters for entree and they were small and not as fresh as they should have been . The mains were just as disapointing. Everything on the the seafood platter was heavily battered and greasy. 2 entrees and 6 mains, a bottle of wine and 3 coffees set us back $390. The fish and chips we had from Mum and Dads local Fish and chip shop were so much nicer and set us back 7% of the total food bill. Ok we didn't have the nice view but honestly, They were so much nicer. I would not go back there again.
