Ever worry about where your next meal is coming from?
Arriving on Kangaroo Island by ferry to pick up a hire car and drive to a motel in Kingscote very late on a Sunday afternoon, we thought our dining options might be somewhat reduced.
No problem : Bella was going full swing!
Bella is a café/restaurant/pizza bar with inside and outside dining options plus pizza delivery.
We opted to eat in the restaurant.
Looking for Kangaroo Island source product we were not disappointed. Like many enterprises on kangaroo island , Bella displays the Good Food Kangaroo Island logo
We were surprised by the extensive a la carte menu available :
Entrees:As well as crusty loaf served with KI olive oil ($9) Garlic pizza was offered. Will try that next visit.
Six entrée choices plus oysters from American River 6/$18 – 12/$24 natural , other options 6/$19 or 12/$25
Light Summery Meals are available ($16-18.5) plus a range of sides.
The Mains menu included dishes to suit all patrons : Beef, duck, chicken, pasta & King George Whiting. Prices range from $22 to $29.50. Most expensive was Beef Fillet or King George Whiting .
Pizza eaters are catered for with a huge range at economical prices.
Casual lunch diners can design their own wraps or baguettes approx $9.00.
Surprising range of wines available by glass or bottle. By glass- choice of ten $6 – 9.5
By bottle - ten Sparklings $21 – 110 ( dearest Moet & Chandon Champagne) but a bottle of Yarra Burn Premium Curvee at $24 : that is a bargain at a restaurant.
Seventeen white whites and twenty-one reds are on offer. Most are from mainland Australia but there are seven KI reds and five KI whites in keeping with the Good Food Kangaroo Island commitment. Great to see and experience.
Good range of beers: 18 Australian including one local plus 6 imported.
Bella offers Coffee and cake all day. Pizza’s from 11am – late. Alfresco Lunch from 12pm – 2.30pm. A la Carte Gourmet Restaurant from 6pm.
Favorite Dish: We chose the King George Whiting for main course - Pan Fried Kangaroo Island fillets Served with, white wine, Verjus, Butter Reduction or house made Tartare Sauce, Cocktail Potatoes and a Caper Berry Salad $29.5
We drank a bottle of Bay of Shoals Sauvingon Blanc ($26)and we were very impressed with our first sample of wine from KI.
All in all - a better than average dining experience heightened by the delight in finding good food and good service on a Sunday night when our expectations were that maybe businesses would be closed.

We had to have lunch at the Marron Café at the Andermel Marron Farm located right in the centre of Kangaroo Island.
I suggest you time your visit so that you can enjoy eating fresh marron for lunch after visiting the processing plant to see the tanks in which they are grown. An extra attraction is wine tasting of Two Wheeler Wines made from grapes grown on the property. The company also makes some condiments using “bush tucker” produce so try some of them as well.
The Café is open from 1030 to 1630 with last food orders 1600. Lunch therefore provides the best opportunity for dining (and wining - but take care with alcohol consumption if driving).
The lunch carte offers six choices Marron a la Two Wheeler – oven grilled marron covered with a Bush Myrtle, Sauvignon Blanc, Verjuice and cream sauce with roasted capsicum and KI potatoes stacked on baby spinach $36.
Cold Marron Salad – freshly cooked marron tails served with a garden salad and Two Wheeler Creek creamy seafood dressing $20 (entrée) $36 (main)
Poachers Platter – Andermel marron, KI whiting, scallops, prawn skewers served with a garden salad , served with herbed garlic pita bread and 3 Two Wheeler Creek Sauces: savoury chilli and KI honey sauce; lemon myrtle tartare sauce , bush tomato and mountain pepper relish. Serves 2 $80
There are three other choices:
KI Whiting served with oven baked KI potatoes and garden salad with lemon myrtle tartare $ 26.
Grilled Scotch Fillet with a concoction of local vegs topped with bush tomato & mountain pepper relish $30
Warm Chicken Salad - grilled and lightly spiced chicken breast stacked on a garden salad with KI cucumber and yoghurt raita $22
Dessert – selection of cakes etc in refrigerated cabinet : not stopping for lunch – have coffee and cake.
There is a selection of two Wheeler Wines to drink by bottle or glass . three whites, three reds & two sparkling wines are available ($24-33 per btl average glass price $7). Other drinks are available including three South Australian beers.
Favorite Dish: It was a lay-down misaire for meal selection. We came for Marron. She had the first option and he had the cold salad.
We swapped around a bit and both of enjoyed the meals immensely. We would not hesitate to recommend them.
Having tried the wines in the tasting room and having been pleasantly surprised with the tastings : our first ever of Two Wheeler Wines , we drank sauvignon blanc wine by the glass. We enjoyed the Sparkling Chardonnay very much as well and drank a couple of bottles elsewhere during our KI visit.
Located right in the middle of KI the Marron Cafe provides a logical lunch stop on your day's journey whether you start in the east or the west.

For a great pizza at a great prize in a good location you can not go pass Sam's Pizza Cafe/Bar in the main street of Kingscote.
Favorite Dish: I can't remember the name of the pizza but it included locally produced sheep cheese, i think it was called the special. The supreme is also worth a try. Enjoy!

The pubs in the centre of Kingscote provide pretty standard Aussie tucker - pies and chips - but the Beachcomber restaurant at the Wisteria Lodge hotel offers a surprisingly innovative menu of both Australian and international cuisine. With a decent bottle of South Australian wine, you just can't go wrong.

The best restaurant in Kingscote that we found was Ellson's Seaview Guest House.
The diningroom is very homey, beautiful ceiling, good food, and very friendly owners.
Favorite Dish: There is a room in back of the restaurant that has several computers.

Good seafood by kyoub
A strange name and place for a restaurant but don't let the name fool you. The food is delicious. It has a lot of hanging plants in the open restaurant to make it look homey. There is a woodburning stove in the center of the room to keep off the chill.

We stopped here for lunch and got the tour of the place. He explained about the ponds as he drove us around the property.
We went back to the cafe and had a great meal of Marron and Yabby plus several side dishes.
Favorite Dish: We had never eaten Marron and Yabby before eatring it here.

Food tastes so good cooked over an open fire. We did a lot of cooking on the "barbie" during our Kangaroo Island stay, even if the barbie was nothing more than a metal grill propped on some rocks surrouding a fire pit. Fuel was plentiful as we collected it from the nearby forest.
