As the old historic buildings in Mintaro are heritage listed, I liked the way each had plaque stating what the building originally was or is, and what year it was built. So handy, especially for photos, and helpful if you haven't had a chance to pick up the heritage walk brochure.
Slate has been quarried in Mintaro since the mid 1860s. It is one of the best slates in the World, and on my walks, I found quite a bit of slate in Mintaro. Some houses were built of slate, I found fences and probably if I was able to go inside a house, I would find a lot more slate used.
Mintaro Slate is quarried for domestic and commercial use, including flooring, fireplaces and bench tops, patios, paths, gardens and verandahs, and is well-known internationally for its use in billiard tables.
The working quarry can be seen from the viewing area only and you have to report to the Office or Manager on arrival.
Quarry is located at Kadlunga Road, Mintaro
