The Barn Steakhouse: The best steak in town

by alisonr Written Oct 22, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place has the reputation as being THE place to get a steak. They have many different cuts on the menu.. and one chicken and one fish dish! Not the place to go if you are a vegetarian. I think you would just be able to get a salad.

Favorite Dish: Tuscan Chicken is unreal!! The wine list is so huge it is fantastic - and most of it local from Coonawarra. My fave to go with the chicken is Hollicks Savignon Blanc Semillion. Yummo!!

    Lots of Pubs: Pubs

by alisonr Written Oct 22, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As well as having many really good restaurants and cafes, you can still get a typical pub meal at the many pubs in town. Rather than give them each a separate tip, here are a list of my fave places to get a decent pub meal at a decent price!

Jackson's at The Commersh - Commerical Street West
Bertha's Grill at the Park Hotel - Commerical Street East
Jens Hotel - Commercial Street West - enter opposite the Cave Gardens
The Federal Hotel - Commerical Street West

Favorite Dish: Chicken snitzel and chippies!

Gormet Indian Restaurant: I love Indian!

by alisonr Updated Nov 26, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Great newish restaurant, first Indian one in town. I love indian, and these guys do a great job. The decor is nice, welcoming service and very friendly. It is not by any means a flash or very attractive looking restaurant, but the food is great!

Favorite Dish: I love Chicken Tikka, last time I went my friend had extra hot Beef Vindaloo and it really was hot. Butter Chicken in nice too if you don't like hot. Papadums with mint ratia are the best!

Sage and Muntries: Eat aussie bush tucker . . . . sort of

by alisonr Written Mar 13, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Great food is the hallmark of this cafe. Australian native flora, berries, nuts, jams etc, hence their name Muntries, this is an aussie berry found in the bush.

Favorite Dish: my mum loves the local buffalo, which by a strange conincidence actually live in the paddock next to our farm,
rissotto pollo is my fave, plus lasagne. Desserts are to die for! They have an ever changing and undated special baord, you wont miss it, it takes up half the wall!

    Le Cavalier: My fave

by alisonr Updated Dec 10, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is right up there in the Mount as one of the best places to eat in style. The decor is traditional without being too old fashioned, with a cosy log fire and beautiful woodern chairs.
Not a huge restaurant so it is not over crowded and loud.

Favorite Dish: They change the menu fairly regularly, but my all time fave is the Marengo Skin, which is brest chicken pieces simmered in a tomato based sauce, and served in a wholed out potato. Delicious!!

Open on Wednesday & Thursday. Open for dinner Tuesday to Saturday nights, seats 65.

    Caffe Belgiorno: Italian

by alisonr Written Feb 13, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The best pizza and pasta in town. The place can get a bit busy so it pays to book. The waiting staff have a reputation for being dizzy (blonde) and unintelligent, but it is a nice meal and nice atmosphere.

Favorite Dish: Any gormet pizza from the wood fire oven, or pasta, Rococos Rigatoni is good, anything really!

Really nice modern restaurant, sit out the front in the atrium on a nice day. Right across the road from the cave gardens. a nice mix of asian and mediteranean styles, great flat breads, pastas, risotto, and soups. Great seafood specials.

Favorite Dish: I really like the flatbreads, bruscettas and salads for a lunch. For tea go for the pasta, risotto or a stirfry.

    Anno Domani: Anno Domani

by alisonr Updated Mar 12, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A great new restaurant in the heart of the city. Uses local ingredients to create a rather interesting mix of flavours. I like to drop in here for a coffee and relax on the couches in the upstairs areas.

Favorite Dish: I didn't find too much that I really loved, there is not a lot of chicken on the menu. But if you like beef you will be fine. For lunch the other day I had a sensational Moroccan Lamb open sandwich. Really worth having.

    Cafe Belgiorno: Wood fired pizza

    by Kate-Me Updated Sep 12, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    1 more image

Cafe Belgiorno is an Italian restaurant with both the usual and Wood Fired pizzas (and other meals).
The floor is wooden and the ceiling has exposed wooden beams, creating a nice atmosphere (perhaps original, as the building was once a mill)
We chose it as it seemed a little more upmarket than the 'Fasta Paster' and typical fast food found elsewhere in the city - there are some gourmet restaurants, but really not many, and styles apart from Chinese are a bit limited.
This restaurant has won many state awards for its Pizza, and has a good range of interesting gourmet pizzas as well.

Favorite Dish: On our second visit in September 2005, We had a gourmet wood fired vegetarian pizza with sundried tomato and herbs which was rather good, with a touch of charcoal on the base from the wood oven. Nice crispy crust too.

Malaysia House: Great Asian and BYO

    by Tam13 Written Feb 7, 2009

A great place that allows you to BYO alcoholic beverages.
Big variety of dishes at a great price.

Sometimes the service can be a bit average, but the cheap food makes up for it.

    Favorite Dish: Satay Prawns
Toffee Banana and icecream - unreal!

  • cafe bellgiorno mt gambier: Terrible service, poor food and very rude manager

    by Jonest74 Written Jul 22, 2010

I don't write online reviews. Tonight's experience at caffe belgiorno was bad enough to make me get online and write. As the title says: appalling service (75 minutes for my basic pasta meal), poor food (still a nasty taste in my mouth) and a rather horrible encounter with the manager at the end of the night who told me I was an unreasonable man and that the customer is not always right. I walked out and got online immediately.

    Bullfrogs: Riddip........

by alisonr Written Mar 12, 2006

This place specialises in relaxed after work drinks, quick light lunches, and large parties or get togethers with you mates. On 3 levels, this place is great. I come here quite a lot, especially before the movies as it is right next door.

Favorite Dish: I love the chicken salad. Also a chicken dish I can't recall the name of. Desserts are awesome too.

Sorrento Cafe: Cafe, lunches & dinners

    by Kate-Me Written Apr 11, 2004
    Cafe

I liked this cafe as soon as I saw it, with all its glass at the front (like a glassed in terrace - I think the roof opens in summer) with running fountain and cafe/restaurant enclosed area at the back, painted in a vivid textured tuscany like yellow with blue framed windows.
They announce their menu as mediterranean style food, with some rice & stir fry dishes, and a specials board with meals between $11- $14.

Favorite Dish: The cappucino is really nice and especially more frothy than you would usually find.
There are also some very attractive looking cakes, though I managed to resist them!
