Granite Island day walk
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fairly recently completed is the 40 minute island walk around the top of Granite Island. Great sea views and some unusual rock formations. Watch the rough waves crash on the cliffs below. Towards the end of the walk, a boardwalk takes you downward to sea level again, where the Island's only structure, a small glassy restaurant, is located.

Take the tramway over to Granite Island...They have a team of Clydesdales that pull the renovated trams over the railway line to the Island...Its a 40 minute return journey and you can spend time on the island when you get there. The tram departs every forty minutes. Return journey is Adults $7.00 Children $5.00 Family $20.00 You can go only one way if you wish and walk the other....It operates daily. Each tram weighs 4.8 tonnes. The local government now owns and operates the trams and any proceeds are returned to the community facilities...

    Find the fairy penquins!!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Granite Island is a Nature Park...If you are careful and look very well, you may spot a penquin hiding in their little hollows... If you dont have the patience to do this..guided tours are available. These begin every night at dusk on the Island. Bookings are required at the Information Centre near the tram track.. Cost is $12.50 per adult $7.50 per child $36.00 per family... I actually found one by myself...and I saw some swimming and diving into the water from the rocks...have patience and you will find one!!!

    Penguin Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • Penguin Tours given by a Park Ranger operate nightly at or just after dusk (for tickets I think you see the Information Centre just near the bridge) If you don't want to take a tour, the only other way to see the penguins is to eat at the restaurant on the island. At least then you're sheltered from the wind and can just go outside when you see the penguins begin to waddle up the rocks below.

    The Heysen Trail
For some awesome scenery take a walk on the “Heysen Trail” which can be connected to just past the Bluff or at Parsons beach or Newland Headlands.(A must do). You can walk this track to Cape Jervis but it takes a couple of days, camping areas are available for keen bushwalkers. Pick up the map from the tourist information centre in Victor Harbour.
