The Telegraph Hotel: A traditional Tas Pub

by seamandrew Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The 'Telegraph' Hotel was established in the 1850s, it name commemorating the arrival in Hobart of the telegraph in 1857. This revolutionary system of communication with the world began its operations in the old Water Police building which once stood across the road from the Telegraph hotel. By 1900, the 'Telegraph' was teh waterside workers' pub.

Today it's just a pub with some dining options. It very traditionally decorated inside and they have a good variety of beers on tap. Why not go in and have one. I haven't tried the accommodations there so I'll leave that to someone else to write a tip about.

Dress Code: Anything goes as long as you have some clothes on I suppose.

Tasmania is fairly low on the NIGHTLIFE Era, if you are a party-goer searching for a place resembling IBIZA....Tasmania is NOT for you :-)
If you are looking for nature, georgeous world heritage hikes, Tasmania is just the place. This is Coles Bay, near Wineglass Bay.

I stayed at the NEw Sydney Hotel which has a bar downstairs, where there is live music every night. Around hobart there are many Irish Pubs, so if you are thirsty, no need to look too long.
There are just a few Clubs, one of them is at the Casino of Hobart, nice music, trendy people, and the second big one is the BRewery, which has a bar, and two night clubs in one.

None, that I knew of. Go to bed and enjoy early crisp mornings! I loved getting up early, catching the tiny 'Emmalisa' ferry from Bellerive and making the 15 minute ride across to the Western Shore to buy fresh salmon off the docks! Then going back home and frying it for breakfast! Yum! :)
