  • This is the cheapest place for internet access in town! The lovely lady who runs this shop actually sells imported clothes (Indian Style), but besides she has set up some computers for the VT addicted traveller.

    15min-up to 1hr internet for 3 AU$

    Mawson's Sheepskin and Opals
    by ATXtraveler
Located just a block away from the fishing piers and a couple blocks away from Franklin Square, is one of the few souvenir shops in the CBD area. It is called Mawson's Sheepskins and Opals, and has a ton of t-shirts, fur products, keyrings, bumper stickers and all those other collectables for the tourists.

In the back room however there are a few other high end souvenirs such as the sheepskin, and the opals. Expert tourist pricing allows you to yet again use your bargaining skills to haggle for a better price, or just grin and bear it for full price knowing you are supporting the local community.

The shirts here were ok on pricing, and there were a few nick-knacks that would not set you back too badly.

All Aussie cities has a street marked and devoted to the art of shopping. In Hobart, it's Elizabeth Street Mall, where you can find a concentration of departmental stores, boutiques, bookstores, cafes, shoe-stores and other shops selling you things you might or might not need.

So for folks in Hobart on the weekdays (where you'll miss the weekend Salamanca Market), this is the place to be.

Do note that like all Aussie cities, all shops closed at 5pm on most weekdays except for Thurs and Fri when it is late night shopping.

Everything under the sun I would presume.

Varies from stores to stores, depending on what you're buying.

  • Me & my mate bumped into Ian at Salamanca Market where he had a stall and was doing a brisk business selling away his postcards & photos.

Photographer to photographer, it was always a joy speaking to a fellow enthuiast.

If you like to stock up on scenic shots, well, look out for Ian, if he is still peddling his fine talents at the market. If not, try to hunt him down at his Gallery in Richmond. (We tried but we could not find his Gallery)

    Photos, postcards etc

They're not at all too expensive.

    (Miscellaneous): Indian shops

  • In the centre of the city we also found some interesting Indian Bazaar type shops.

There were Asian food shops, Health food and specialty stores.

Hobart seems to have all the shopping you could want and more, amazing for its relatively small size and population.
The shopping centre is quite modern too.

Near the intersection of Watchorn & Liverpool there?s even a little city supermarket.

Central City Arcades/Centrepoint Arcade: Specialty Shops

  • Liverpool Street I found to be VERY good.
There's one shop there called The Tasmania Shop, which had probably the best quality Tasmanian goods I saw anywhere.

It was expensive (but if you?re from Europe or USA it?s half price with the exchange rate!) but a huge range of items, many quite unique.

There are many hidden courts/arcades in the city which were much more interesting to me than the more obvious shops (perhaps the discovey of out of the way places?)
Outside the Cat & Fiddle Arcade (behind the Mall) is the Darrell Lea Chocolate shop - yummy good quality chocolate
The Myer Department store is also to be found here.

EATING : There?s a food court in the Cat & Fiddle Arcade

In the Centrepoint arcade, I made a real find of a shop : a Lord of The Rings style Faerie shop called « Grios ». They had some interesting things I?d never seen anywhere else, like special candles, pewter goblets in the form of creature faces, even pewter mounted butterfly ornaments which were made from real butterflies wings, then laquered. I could hardly believe they were real, but you can actually see the fine butterfly veines in the wings. Exquisite but very expensive !
Best of all, were Lord of the Rings gold or silver rune engraved ?Golum? rings.

The "Golum" rings were around A $200, not sure what carat gold, but if you're into that stuff it's probably not a lot to pay.

  • Salamanca Arts Centre - Hobart
    Salamanca Arts Centre
    by Intrepidduck
Established in the early 1970s by the Hobart City Council - Salamanca Arts Centre is largely a space for local artists and crafts people to display, exhibit and sell their wares and works. Inspite of the over all Salamanca Pl precinct being a bit of a tourist trap there can be found here high quality hand made products and contemporary art, craft and theatre performed. The place is a bit of a rabbit warren, all the stores are located on the ground level while studios, galleries and management are located on the upper levels. The Peacock Theatre is located with in the Salamanca Arts Centre.

Handmade or locally made post cards / greeting cards, locally crafted jewelery and homewares, drawing and paintings.

Due to the number of different artist run shopfronts exhibiting their works here prices are usually reasonable and competitive for what most of the products are.

I found the souvenirs to be of exceptionally high quality generally (very little ?cheap stuff? like on the mainland, I noted with surprise). You pay a bit more for the quality, but it looks to be well worth it.

No 1 : Wooden products : i.e., wooden chopping boards and cheese knives made from Huon Pine or Sassafras timber, other wooden products,

    Cascade locally brewed beer.
Apple Cider (from the famous Huonville area), Tasmanian devil stuffed toys, honey, fortified wines, fruit, wine, cheese, pewter native animals locally cast, lavender oils, soaps.
