This mountain, standing tall behind the city adds to the beautiful city skyline. Many enjoy the trip up to the summit of Mt. Wellington where you have spectacular views of the area around Hobart. There are observation decks up at the summit as well as an observation center where you can find shelter from the quite often harsh winds up there. In the winter, snow covers the mountain for about 2 months and the summit is off limits. I don't know when it will be, but on my next trip to Tasmania, I intend to go up to the summit!

  • Tip Rating:
  • A great thing to do on a clear day is a walk up Mount Wellington (or drive up). From top of the 1271m high mountain you'll have splendid vistas on Hobart and the surroundings. There are a lot of different tracks up, but they require a certain level of fitness (a return walk takes about 6 hrs). To get to the starting point of the tracks, take bus 48 or 49 from Franklin Square to Fern Tree. From there you've got a 13km walk to the top.

If you are headed to Hobart, I would definitely recommend taking a trip to the top of Mount Wellington. Although it is very windy, the view from the top makes it more than worth it. With a 360 degree view of the city and surrounding mountains and valleys, this place is ideal for some great pictures. You can look right up the Derwent River past the Cadbury plant, east out to Port Arthur and its historic pennisula, south past Bruny Island and parts beyond. This does close in bad weather though, so make sure you go when the weather is safe!

Mountains.: See Hobart (and Taz) from Mount Wellington!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This makes a great trip on a clear sunny day where you can catch breath-taking views of Hobart and parts of South Tasmania, 22kms above sea level. There are observation decks at the summit to offer you different vantage points. You can spend about 0.5-1 hour at the summit. Please note that it is colder up at the summit and it can get quite windy, so do remember to bring your warm clothes. You can catch a Mount Wellington Shuttle Bus Service from near the Tourist Info Office in Hobart for A$25.00 return (circa 2004) per pax. Free & Easy.

  • Directions: You are so high above the city ... you get a real perspective of the actual physical size of the city. You can see to the beaches in the South, almost the whole river and the city centre.

    Mountains.: Hobart: Mt Wellington
At 1270m Mt Wellington, or refered to by locals as "the mountain", dominates Hobart's backdrop. Climbing to the top can be done either by foot from Fern Tree or by taking a number of pathways out of Cascades. It is recomended that people come prepared for some enduring hiking and also that the Mount Wellington Walk Map is a must for information. This can be bought at the Service Tasmania Office at 134 Macquarie Street, Hobart. The views from the top are most rewarding when its clear, and not to windy. During winter months and depending on conditions certain sections of the Pinnacle Road can be closed off to motor traffic due to snow coverage. In good weather bicycling to the top can be a challege, by this means coasting much of the way down afterwards. Public buses out of Franklin Square in Hobart only go as far as Fern Tree.

    Mountains.: A perfect panorama
At 1270 meters Mount Wellington towers over Hobart and is visible from just about everywhere. It was suggested that we take a trip up as the weather was fine and the views should be good, they weren`t wrong. Its a long slow drive, the roads are often closed in winter and the following day there was to be a race from the casino in the city to the summit with the winner expected to arrive after about 4 hours.
