Hobart: Bottom Bits Buses - Great Day-trippers!

by xuessium Updated Apr 4, 2011

This is a great company running day trips to all the main sights around Hobart; suitable for students and folks traveling on a budget. You get to mingle with the mainly young (hostelite) crowds and see places at cheaper costs.

I went by plane from Adelaide to Hobart as I had heard warnings about the rough waters were I to go by the ferry. On the other hand, one of my old co-workers just got back via the ferry and he had no problems. Pic thanks to John!
In Hobart there is no subway, just buses. The Tasman bridge from the East side to the West side of Hobart is scary! One of the lanes changes direction several times a day!!! Aaarggh! But as a tourist, unless you really wanna see a summer cricket match (I DID! Really got into cricket in the summer months.. and I stood just one meter from Shane Warne!! ;) ) there is no need for you to cross the river.

i went to Hobart by taking Jetstar, of course, the earlier you have the booking, the cheaper price and more seat avaible for sure. in General, ticket listed on Jetstar is reasonable. the only one thing that i am not pretty satisfied is the seat in cabin is pretty untidy, one time i saw some snacks was left on the seat.

Transfer from Hobart airport to Hobart "downtown"

    by KB&MC Written Sep 21, 2007

You can buy a $20AUD return ticket from the driver of 'Airporter' shuttle bus - they take you right to your accomodation. Call them the day before you want to leave, with your flight time, and they'll pick you up in time enough to get you back.
(A taxi costs c.$30-40 one way)

    Tasmania by car.

by seamandrew Written Sep 4, 2004

In order to see the many wonders of Tasmania, I highly recommend renting a car. I was a bit nervous of doing this as it would be the first time I drive on the 'British' side of the road. Fortunately, I mastered it without out a problem. Even when turning! I had to focus more than I ever do when driving, but I did it!

The rental rates weren't bad at all. We went with Hertz which was a little higher than some of the others, but not by much.

Be warned, that some of the roads in Tasmania wind back and forth until no end and this can get quite tiresome for someone not accustomed to driving on their side of the road. Make sure you take the insurance just in case. Our guide bood recommended it highly. They're reputedly the hardest roads to navigate in Australia.

    Hobart International Airport

When flying to Tasmania, you'll have to options as far as destinations go. You can either fly to Hobart of Launceston. I've never been to the latter, but our flight to Hobart was excellent. The views of Tasmania from the plane were wonderful. Considering we sat on the left side of the plane that allowed us to see the eastern coast of Tasmania as we flew south. One of the treats was Freycinet National Park and Oyster bay, the bay it sits on.

Hobart Airport is very small, but both of Australia's largest domestic carriers (Qantas and Virgin Blue) will get you there affordably. We flew Qantas and were very pleased! It's impossible to get lost in this small airport and the rental car counters are right at the terminal. Lastly, the airport is just a quick drive from Hobart itself.

In Hobart, most of the streets are one way. If you?re driving, it can get quite frustrating. left right left turn...and on and on it goes.
(Especially annoying if you?re looking for a particular street number and realize you?re a block too low and will have to go right around the whole block again)

The best way to get there is to fly from one of the big cities, or take the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport and from there with the bus.
In Hobart the best way of getting around is by foot, all the best things are in Walking distance, if you want to go around Tasmania, car hire is the best thing because the busses don't go that frequently. You can get good deals on cars because there a a few garages that rent second hand cars.

Seconds after I drove out of Economy Rental, I proceeed to scrap a car...I was too far over to the LEFT! Oops! This is why Economy Rental was good. All of the cars are old, so they already have scratches. It cost me $392 for 2 weeks.

Kendall Airlines (subsidiary of Ansett Airlines) and Qantas both serve Hobart from Sydney and Melbourne. You can include Hobart with the various Air Passes that can be purchased from outside of Australia. Buying direct, at least a month in advance means good savings!
Walking is the best way to see the city but renting a car guarantees that you can see as much of Tasmania as possible. Bus routes are pretty good if you are back-packing.
