Aireys Inlet Things to Do

Off the point of Airleys Inlet from the lighthouse is one of the first of many rock formations that are scattered along Australias Great Ocean Road coastline. In all sorts of formations the rocks of the Great Ocean Road have been etched over decades of wave crashing in dividing up our shoreline into little pinnicles and outcroppings.

The Eagle Rock was so named as Aireys Inlet used to be called Eagles Nest Point. It is part of the Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary which is home to rockpools and many marine wildlife.

Personally though I always think of Eagle Rock though in the words of Daddy Cool:

    Now listen,
    Oh we're steppin' out
    I'm gonna turn around,
Gonna turn around once and we'll do the Eagle Rock.
    Oh momma!
    Oh you're rocking well!
Hmm yeah you do it so well,
Well we do it so well when we do the Eagle Rock
    Now momma,
    Yeah you're rockin' fine!
Why don't you give me a sign?
Hmm just give me a sign and we'll do the Eagle Rock.

Hey Hey Hey, good old Eagle Rock's here to stay,
I'm just crazy 'bout the way we move,
    Doin' the Eagle Rock.
Oh Oh Oh come on fast, you can come on slow
I'm just crazy 'bout the way we move,
    Doin' the Eagle Rock.

    Go momma!
    Well you're rockin' fine!
Why don't you give me a sign?
Just gotta give me a sign and we'll do the Eagle Rock.
    Oh baby!
    Well I feel so free!
Hmm what you do to me!
What you do to me when we do the Eagle Rock.

    Now listen,
    More we're steppin' out.
    Yeah, gonna turn around,
Gonna turn around once and we'll do the Eagle Rock.

    Doin' the Eagle Rock.
    Doin' the Eagle Rock.
    Doin' the Eagle Rock.

Nicknamed "The White Lady" Split point Lighthouse was built in 1891 on what was originally called Eagles Nest Point. The rock of the coastline which can be viewed from this point is still called Eagle Rock. It opens up for viewing inside only 1 day of the year and is said to be haunted by those who operated its light to the sea which was converted to 4 automatic flashes every 20 seconds in 1919.

The lighthouse was built as a reaction to the sinking of the ship Joseph Scammell. Perched on the cliffs 70 metres above sea level the main light can be seen 30 km away. The lighthouse also provides excellent views of the surrounding coastline and when it opens on that one day a year some 2000 people climb the 30 metre staircase to view out from the Lighthouse balcony.

It is also known as they symbol seen often in the TV show made here "Round the Twist" from the books by the author Paul Jennings.
