Cape Otway Lighthouse is a short drive off the Great Ocean Road. It was first lit in 1848 and was the second lighthouse completed on mainland Australia. It remains the oldest surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia. There are a few trails around the lighthouse that will take you to stunning views of the Southern Ocean. There is also a little cafe, an interesting gift shop and small museum here. You can pay to take several tours as well.

Cape Otway marks the point where the waters of Bass Strait meet those of the Southern Ocean. The lighthouse on the cape was built in 1848. It marked a very dangerous coastline. Ships to Melbourne had to find the 40 kms wide gap between this coast and King Island, which was a difficult task with 19th century navigation methods. Ships from Europe usually sailed far south, close to Antarctica, to make use of the west-eastern currents. After three months on the oceans the tiniest mistake in time measuring per day summed up. Many ships crashed on the cliffs west of Cape Otway which became known as "Shipwreck Coast".
The lighthouse can be climbed. There is someone up there who explains how it works. From the gallery you have the best view of the coastline.

The walk is quite easy and should be suitable for all ages. A track wanders through fern glades and rainforest among tall stands of beech, messmate and other hardwoods.
The walk will take around 30-45 minutes and you will leave feeling totally relaxed after a sojourn with nature to refresh the soul.
A car park has picnic facilities and there are signs describing the walk and what you will see.

My very ordinary camera, just didn't do this place justice.
I can't describe the feeling, when the falls first came into view. It was awesome...
The place was completely isolated from the outside world, surrounded by beautiful ferns and lush greenery.

It was windy the day we arrived but it didn`t spoil our day, the scenery all along the road is spectacular, all you have to do is get out of the car and go see it.
