Sweet Decadence: Handmade Chocolates and other treats
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am totally biased when it comes to this shop. I was the owner for 7 years and it is still as popular now as it was then.
Kay and Alan have moved the cafe/chocolate shop to another area in the Main St. It is wonderful.

Inside they have kept the old world look with style plus.

All the chocolates and chocolate novelty items are made on the premises.

You can stand in front of the wonderful old glass counter and decide which chocolate you will choose out of the 25 plus varieties.

You can also buy the other chocolate novelties items, clown faces, very large freckles, ginger logs and so much more.

There is also a menu of snacks and drinks.

Open Daily from 930am to 5pm
    Breakfast and Lunch
Bring your own wine if you feel like a glass or two with lunch.

Chocolates is what this shop is all about!!

My favourite chocies are Pecan, Milkshake, Brandied Apricot, hazlenut stick and all of the other 24!

Then it's the food and drinks:)

You can start at a couple of dollars to as much as you need to spend to help that chocolate craving:)

The Pantechnicon: Art from the area and beyond
  • Tip Rating:
  • This Gallery was opened a number of years ago after the owner totally refurbished an old Garage. It was transformed into one of the first Galleries in this area.

The sparse area is filled with work from local artists as well as art that is sourced from other areas.

You can find Jewellery, pottery, glassware, iron and of course paintings and sketches.

Before a garage this building was a grain and animal store. The leadlight windows above the front door give a hint at the building past.

    Whatever your wallet can afford:)

There are some small pieces of art that are quite reasonably priced.
Then there are some very expensive pieces.

They will wrap and ship for you.

Thursday to Monday 10am to 6pm
    Other times by appointment.

Avant Garden Bookstore: Take a Look... its in a Book
  • Tip Rating:
  • During our walk down the streets of Daylesford, we came across a very large selection of books, comics, audio CDs and movies in the Avant Garden bookstore. It was facinating to me to walk through this bookstore where there were hundreds of books on sports history in Australia, and I had a thought to myself... I would not know a single person in any of those books! Then to look through all the novelists, poets, and other entertainers throughout the entire place it was a very surreal experience!

I would highly recommend taking a look through here, as there were tons of things to keep your interest. The other nice thing is that you can send your kids roaming to the second story which is filled to the roof with old comics! (Don't worry, the expensive ones are behind glass).

I did not end up buying anything, as I can not actually read!

$5-20AUD would be the average I would assume.

Convent Gallery Retail Shop: Shop like a Nun
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want a little taste of everything that Daylesford has to offer all in one shop, then the Convent Gallery retail shop is the place for you to go. There are local food stuffs, art, crafts, and faux antiques. There was also an extensive number of different jewellry types.

While we were there, we were actually shopping for gifts for Christmas, and there were plenty of ideas. I ended up getting my mother a couple of plate holders in the shape of ducks for her home in Waskom. We also tried the coffee there which was nice.

With more time or more people to shop for, we probably could have purchased a little more!

There were gifts from a couple AU Dollars up to thousands for some of the jewelry.

    Dragons and Dreaming: New Age
  • Tip Rating:
  • This shop has been in Daylesford for many years.

The sign is a little warn but it's still a fun place to browse.

There is an assortment of things to buy. Jewellery, unusual gifts, crystals and clothes.

A great place for kids to browse as well.

My grand daughter will not go anywhere esle for her presents. It takes her a very long time to decide!

I think the jewellery is rather nice.

Izrael would say the crystals and funny little battery toys that they have throughout the shop.

You will find something for a few dollars.
Things like the solid silver items can be as expensive as $200 plus dollars.

    Pantechnicon Daylesford: Country Art Galleries
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the little galleries located in the heart of Daylesford was open while we were there so we took a look around. There were several different types of art on display, from photography and painting down to sculpture and metalwork.

It was an enjoyable portion of an hour to see the art of the Victorian countryside, and there was some pretty good work on display. I am not an art critic, so I am sure we could get a better rendition of how good the art was from someone else, but it was worth the time to look around.

$5 AUD for some artistic postcard size pictures up to $1000's for a wall-covering painting.

The Puppet Shop: Something for the Kids
  • Tip Rating:
  • This shop is tucked away off the main drag. You will find lots of colourful puppets and other fun things for kids to play with.

They also have puppet making for the kids. You have to book for this.

I am sure the kids will tell you what they would like to buy:)

From a few dollars to $40,00 upwards. Very reasonable prices for that something fun for the kids.

Daylesford Post Office: Daylesford Post Office
  • Tip Rating:
  • I really like old style architecture - so the Daylesford Post Office had to get a mention and a photograph.
What can you buy in a post office - stamps of course. Most post offices sell just about everything now, from stamps and envelopes to printers and faxes, and everthing in between.
This is a nice old building and it deserves to be placed on my pages as a classic, older style building, probably built during the gold rush era of the 1800s but I could be wrong. If anyone has the date that it was built I would like to hear from them.
