Echuca Things to Do

  • Holden Museum

Die heart Holden fan?? Well Echuca has a Holden Museum where you can view models ranging from 1930 to present. They have at least 40 restored cars and historical information. To be honest I wasn't all that into it not being into cars myself, but Shaun enjoyed it and got some great photos. There is also a gift shop for souvenirs. Admission is $8 per...

  • Try and catch a yabby!

While we were here we bought a yabby trap to put into the river and try our luck at catching something. There are plenty of fishing shops on HIgh St that sell these and we picked one up for $8. We left ours out overnight and even though we didn't catch any yabby's we caught plenty of shrimp - so at least we got something!

  • Dont miss the Paddle Steamer.

You can't come to Echuca without going on a Paddlesteamer. That would be like going to Sydney without seeing the Opera House. At the time we were in town, the PS Emmylou was out of service so we choose to go on the PS Canberra instead. The Canberra was built in 1912 and was fully restored in 2003 and is a great was to see the Murray River. The...

  • Cruise on a Paddlesteamer on the Murray

A visit to Echuca isn't really complete without a ride on one of the 4 or 5 Paddlesteamers that run cruises (some 1 hour cruises, dinner cruises, and even one that has little cabins on board and runs 4-5 night trips down the Murray)The 1 hour cruises are about $25-$27, depending on which paddlesteamer you take. My favorite is the Emmylou as it's...

  • ECHUCA PORT AREA WITHOUT TICKET

If you haven't bought the admission ticket for the wharf walk, all this means is that you won't be to go into quite a few buildings. You will be able see the blacksmith working, and to view everything, this was good enough for us!We were happy with all we saw.

Hare & Percy streets in central Echuca, was where the majority of Churches were, mind you, they were pretty good to view!St Andrew's Presbyterian (now Uniting) Church was built in 1889. If you look opposite the Church, a marker records the height of the massive 1870 flood. Still walking along Hare street, I found St Mary's Catholic Church (1865) on...

A must visit in Echuca is the old wharf area where quite a few of the old time Paddlesteamers are.The P.S. Emmylou is driven by a completely restored 1906 steam engine, and is quite new, as it was built locally between 1980-82 in the style of the 19th century paddleboats. She is 30 metres long and 10 metres wide, steel hulled and timber decked.The...

  • STAR HOTEL

The Star Hotel (1867), isn't a big impressive Hotel like most are in Australia, instead it's a rather plain red brick building, built to cater for the booming river trade. The hotel was constructed with a large under ground bar called The Shades. This was to escape the summer heat to have a drink in the relative cool 12 ft under the ground. The...
