For 20 years I have observed the development of various styles and genres of graffiti art in Melbourne - imported and home grown styles.
This outlawish nature of the graffiti artist has long been an interest of mine. Fitzroy is one place to find the works of Melbourne's hottest street artist.

North Fitzroy has gone from a kind of forgotten corner to quite a diversely pleasant place and very popular address in the past decade. It's hub is around a supermarket, but one which is independantly owned and has a good selection of imported beers! There is a kind of a village feel about this part of inner city Melbourne. If your up this far away from Brunswick Street, in vacinity of the former Nth Fitzroy Post Office, give it some time. Start at the "Tin Pot Cafe", corner of St Georges Road and Scotchmere Street, which dose a real kick arse coffee and after spending a hour or two there you will get the drift of what it's all about being a local.
Here you'll find those special things which make community, supermarket included. There is a decent health foods shop, half a dozen restaurants and one of the most exotic looking flower shops you'll find anywhere. It's found only a few doors south of the "Tin Pot".
Wander down to one of Melbourne's most pleasant parks the Edinburgh Gardens, where you'll see the locals out walking the dog. From this little neck of the woods you can wander back to well trodden Brunswick Street which is quite unlike North Fitzroy.

Nothing beats walking the back streets of this small inner city suburb. There are all sorts of surprises such as local pubs, although fast being discovered by those of further afield; small commercial and artist run galleries; the classic Australian corner store or better known locally as Milk Bars; Kms of bluestone lanes and more recently a large number of plush apartment buildings and warehouse conversions. There is alot to see in Fitzroy's back streets

The edinburough Gardens are a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon in north fitzroy. you can hang out in the dog area and watch all the pooches interact, watch the local skaters 'rip up' the skate bowl or have a BBQ with the free council electric BBQ. Sundays also host some local DJ's spinning some laid back beats under ther own power (and own risk I think). Many a lazy sunday afternoon has been wasted at this park

Fitzroy and Collingwood's doors are something to look at. Many go straight onto the street and some appear in odd places, while others give clues to the inhabitants behind.

Fitzroy is an inner suburb of Melbourne, quite close to the centre of the city. As my Melbourne travelogues are filling up, I decided to make this page to display the photos of a great party at a...
