Bellarine Peninsula: Bellarine Peninsula
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Bellarine Peninsula - Meander around the Bellarine Peninsula - a trip of about 86 kilometres. The Bellarine Peninsula follows the Portarlington Road out of Geelong to historic Drysdale and to nearby Clifton Springs. Then you can drive to Portarlington, through the rolling Peninsula Hills, with views over vineyards to Port Phillip Bay. Follow the Esplanade from Portarlington around the Bay's edge to Indented Head and St. Leonards. Take the return journey along Murradoc Road to Drysdale and the Portarlington Road. Tour the wineries. Travel down to Queenscliff, Portarlington, Point Lonsdale, Drysdale. Travel on the steam train at Queenscliff. Dine or shop at beach front restaurants and shopping centres. Visit the fort and lighthouse at Queenscliff. Getting to Geelong is now easier than ever. You can fly to Avalon Airport using Jetstar and take a shuttle bus to Geelong. You can take the scenic route across Port Phillip Bay using the Queenscliff / Sorrento Ferry. Drive your car on to the Ferry or take a day trip across and walk around Queenscliff for the day. V /Line runs regular trains to Geelong - stopping at the historic Geelong Railway station. The city of Geelong is also a terrific base for touring - you can take trips to great beaches, sharp edged cliffs or take in a winery tour to try out some of our local wine.

    Follow in Buckley's footsteps...
  • Tip Rating:
  • William Buckley was an Englishman born in 1780, who was later accused of stealing and sent to Australia. He escaped from the penal settlement. With no food or water Buckley collapsed on the grave of an Aborigine named Murrangurk. The people of Murrangurk's tribe (the Wathaurong - indigenous to the Geelong area) then assumed that Buckley was the reincarnation of Murrangurk. For the next 32 years Buckley became part of the Wathaurong tribe. Along the Barwon River is Buckley's Falls, one of the places that Buckley stayed while escaping the penal settlement. There is also Buckley's cave in Pt. Lonsdale. William Buckley died in Hobart in 1856, saddened by the massacre of Aborigines and disheartened by 'white' civilisation.

    For Your Piercing Pleasure
  • Tip Rating:
  • I recently got my nosed pierced and went straight to Purely Piercing to get it done. This is because Purely Piercing has a high reputation - one that is well deserved. They are strict on hygiene (so no Piercing guns are used), and they give essential aftercare (to make sure your body reacts well to your chosen piercing). There is an age limit on some types of piercings (a parent/guardian may have to be present for those under 16/18). Their pricing is very reasonable. They have a large range of designs for different kinds of jewellery/piercings. The staff are fun and friendly, they're out and out cool. Update: I no longer have my nose pierced as I had to keep removing it for my work (nose-rings weren't allowed), but if it weren't for my job, I'd get it done again.

    Lttle River Earth Sanctuary
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located 30 minutes from Geelong towards Melbourne. Little River-Ripley Road, Little River I have yet to go to the Sanctuary. Apparantly they are reponsible for the conservation and breeding of rare and endanged species. The Sanctury conducts tours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and bookings are essential.

Fairy Park has been in Anakie forever. Fairy Park is Australia's first and oldest theme park. It used to be coin operated when I was a little girl. Now all the fairy tales are operated by pushing buttons at the front of the displays. Fairy Park has displays of a lot of the fairy tales that you tell your children, such as: Jack and the Beanstalk Goldilocks and the Three Bears Sleeping Beauty Aladdin Sinbad Hansel and Gretel and more. You can take a picnic lunch or barbecue lunch (coin operated barbecues) - there are lots of tables and chairs, and covered dining areas. Birthday parties are popular at Fairy Park and you often see big parties happening. Even the big children (us adults) like to go and see the fairy tales and play in the Camelot playground. There is a model railway display, too. It is a nice day out and not too far out of Geelong. Adults AU$7.00, Children AU$3.50 (these prices may not be current) Opening Hours are from 10.00 am - 5.00 pm. Directions from Geelong - Take the Ballarat Road from Geelong (A300), turn right on to the Geelong-Ballan Road (C141). Follow this road through Anakie until you reach Fairy Park.

Great Ocean Road & Otways: Moonlight Head
  • Tip Rating:
  • Moonlight Head is a pretty spot we discovered quite by accident by choosing a random spot on our map that sounded romantic. It was well worth the gravel road drive 'off the beaten track' to get there. There are at least two walks you can take from the clifftop. It's just some kms east of the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road.

Great Ocean Road & Otways: The Billabong at Lake Elizabeth
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lake Elizabeth billabong - Geelong
    Lake Elizabeth billabong
    by Kate-Me

This Billabong (little pond) is located quite deep in the rainforest, at the end of a quite rough gravel road beyond the town of Colac, around Beech Forest (the lake is poorly signposted and even with a map we struggled to find it because the road isn't labelled till you're several kms down it, but it's well worth the effort to find). This place is not on the Great Ocean Rd, but on the way to it. There is free camping here, and even facilities provided (quite unusual) and looks a great place to try out...we were only here a short while but saw yellow robins, parrots and lots of other birdlife. We took the short walk to the Billabong, but didn't have time to go further. Another hour's walk or so will bring you to Lake Elizabeth itself, a large lake which contains many platypus (and canoe tours to see them are conducted here)

Great Ocean Road & Otways: Johanna Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Johanna beach is situated on the Great Ocean Road between The Twelve Apostles and Apollo Bay. It's a back-up surfing championship beach for the famous Bells Beach at Torquay, though I'd never heard of Johanna before. It was a great spot to camp and a bonus was seeing 2 endangered species little Plovers (only 600 or so left in Austalia) running across the beach so fast you could hardly see their legs move. Rather funny to watch - like they were on wheels (but still no match for a wily fox, their main predator)

Werribee Mansion and Zoo: Werribee Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Werribee is an Open Range Zoo where animals from the grasslands of Australia, Africa and Asia live in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitats. Just north of Geelong, this zoo has grown from an agistment property for Melbourne Zoo into an open range zoo of international standing which provides a truly unique wildlife experience. The zoo was developed around the picturesque Werribee River on a 200 hectare property. You can take a 50 minute guided Wildlife Safari, which will take you close up amongst animals like rhinos, giraffes and zebras and through exhibits like Meerkats, Cheetahs, Vervet Monkeys and Serval cats. There is also the Australian exhibit, with kangaroos, emus and wallabies.

Take a drive down to Port Lonsdale

  • Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, Victoria Australia - Geelong

As we ventured out of Sorrento on our way to Geelong, we took the Sorrento-Queenscliff Ferry. As we neared Queenscliff, we saw three distinct lighthouses out toward the ocean. The farthest in the distance, and probably one of the most important to the Port Phillip Bay is the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse. From Geelong, you would take the 110 highway toward Queenscliff, then follow the signs to Point Lonsdale. There is a very nice little pier you can also walk out on to get a good view of the lighthouse, or you can venture down onto the beach for a stroll. There was alot of safe slow moving water here, so it would also be a good place to bring your children if you are travelling with them.
