Geelong Waterfront: Relaxing on the foreshore..
  • Tip Rating:
  • Relaxing on the foreshore, in a beautiful parklike setting, with lots of shade trees, is very enjoyable here.
You can go for a swim, or just enjoy a spot of peoplewatching... Nice place for a picnic too.

The open zoo has improved alot since my first
visit and each year it seems to be a little better this pic i took in april this year .
It show just how close you get to these Animals giving us glimpse of africa in our own back yard so to speak.
From what I seen on tv's getaway program you can stay over nigh in tents or cabins (i'm not sure which)
The keepers give you guided early morning tour.
it's amazing just how far modern Zoo's have come from the horrible days of distressed looking animals confined to what was nothing better than a cell block .
I couldn't say just how many varieties of animals roam here
nor could I tell you the size the zoo is set on.
What i can tell you for sure is it a worth while trip and even just 2 hours might be enough if your pushed for time

National Wool Museum: National Wool Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The National Wool Museum is a must see for those interested in the pastoral history of Australia.
It contains mainly displays about wool, fleece and sheep, with some audiovisual information.
I'm from the countryside and knew a lot about sheep already, but even so, I still found this museum fairly interesting and informative.
For instance, I learned that Australia is the biggest wool and sheep producer and exporter in the world (New Zealand must surely be a close second).
There are several hands on activities within the museum, such as trying your hand at weaving on a small loom, and carding sheeps fleece (to tease it out and make it ready for spinning). In this picture you can see one of the different sheep fleeces on display and feel the difference in texture and appearance between this wool and that of others alongside it.

    open zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Melbourne is listed as having 3 zoo's but the free range open range zoo in werribee probably deserves a listing under either melbourne or geelong being some what in the middle.
Today I visited the zoo again since it's early days and it has improved alot and continues to do so each year.
Price for adults is about 15.50 ,children I forget .
There is a safari bus trip around the zoo which takes roughly 50 mins and is included in the trip and is well worth it.
there are also walking tracks around the zoo with one spot allowing you to become face to face with some cheetaha's (though from the safety of behind glass.
The Zoo shows animal is a very good way having some kind of freedom and although it's never going to match the city zoo in terms of money ,animals ect it really does get better each year and is well worth a good 4 hours look at

    Geelong Waterfront: Eastern Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Eastern Beach had the first sexually segregated baths which were built in 1844. The foreshore underwent a reconstruction from 1924 - 1940 and a shark-proof enclosure was created after a woman lost both arms in an attack. The beach was then restored again in the early 1990s and now has terraced lawns, palms and pools. Across from the beach are the Botanic Gardens.

Geelong Botanic Gardens: Geelong Botanical Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1851 about 81 hectares of land was set aside for the Geelong Botanical Gardens but it became impractical with the hot dry summers to develop such a huge area into soley Botanical Gardens and so 2 hectares was developed and then later increased.
