GULL Airport Bus: Gull Buses to and from Geelong
  • Tip Rating:
  • I recently used the Gull bus service to go the airport and found it a great way to travel. They will drop you right out front of either the domestic or international terminal (and presumably will pick you up from them as well - my ticket was one way). From the Gull depot it takes 1 hour and 20mins to get to the airport. In Geelong you can get on at McKillop St or arrange to be picked up at the Geelong train station. Most tickets you can buy on the day, but if you are departing from Geelong on a bus that leaves before 8am, you have to buy the ticket at least the day before.

  • I usually recommend car for getting anywhere around vast Australia, and this is no exception. Sure there are buses that can get you to the Great Ocean Rd, and 'off the beaten track' bus tour companies like Oz Experience, but there are so many great off the beaten track things to see that if you don't have your own transportation, you'll miss a lot. For the Great Ocean Road, I've heard a lot of people say it's great by motorcycle, and I can imagine it.

    Free City Bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • During the summer period (and usually early autumn) there is a free Geelong city bus. It takes you around the main parts of the city (which isn't very large). It can be a good way to get your bearings. "The circuit commences at Eastern Park, travels along the waterfront, heads to Johnstone Park and the Geelong Railway Station, visits the Geelong Art Gallery and loops through the city's shopping precincts before heading to the Geelong Botanic Gardens". December to the start of February it operates 7 days a week. February to March it operates only on the weekends. I am uncertain if there is any commentry.

Set Sail with James Craig (not Jenny's Brother)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Geelong has a major history as a port for the travellers on their way to Victoria from all parts. If you are interested in the historical voyages made, you may look into the timetable for the tall ship, James Craig. The James Craig has a history with Victoria, visiting for its first time in 1892, while it was a mere teenager. James Craig is the only 19th century iron barque still operational in the southern hemisphere and one of only four in the world; a great testament to the dedication of the Sydney Heritage fleet and the many people involved in the restoration since 1972. The ship will join Polly Woodside in Victoria as the property of the National Trust of Australia. She will actually have passenger berths, so check out the website!

    V/Line Train: Travel by Train
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the easiest ways to travel to Geelong (especially from Melbourne) is by train. You can also go to Warrnambool, Ballarat or connecting with other trains, you can go to other regions of Victoria. Geelong has 5 train stations (if coming from Melbourne, in order they are): Corio, North Shore, North Geelong, Geelong and South Geelong (although the first three are more just 'stops' than actual stations - you'd have to buy your ticket on the train). For an Economy ticket (return) from Geelong > Melbourne, these are the approximate fares: Ordinary Full Fare: $20.80 Ordinary Concession: $10.40 Off-Peak Saver Full Fare: $14.70 Off-Peak Saver Concession: $7.30 Trains often run from 6am till 11pm. Although check to see if you train goes through to South Geelong, if that's the stop you want (as not all trains do).

The best advice to give someone about using the local bus system, is to try to catch a bus just after the hour. ( e.g. just after 9am, 10am, 11am, etc.) Every ticket lasts for the remainder of the hour from when you get on, plus two more hours. Thus getting a bus just after the hour means you can use the ticket for almost 3 hours. It's also better if you have a concession card for discounts. A ticket for an adult will cost $1.70. Bus timetables are available from the bus driver for 50 cents.
