Belle Verdure Cucina: Cafe in Badgers Brook
  • Satisfaction:
  • I already mentioned this under the Cellar Door...but this looked like a very cool spot. It was definitely buzzing...and it was the place to be. Theres a famous chef here...so the food is supposedly some of the best...

We're definitely going back when we can get a reservation...

DOMAINE CHANDON & GREEN POINT: Perfect place for chilling
  • Satisfaction:
  • They have an excellent cheese platter and it's one of the nicest vineyards in yarra valley. We've been to the one in napa...and were surprised at how many different champers they have here vs in california.

It's a perfect place to chill...

They also have plenty of things to do...opera and events all the time.

Great Australian Ice Creamery: Ice cream!
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Great Australian Ice Creamery is a franchise/chain, but not too widespread, and all the ones I've been to have been great: about 20 or more flavours of ice cream to choose from, including some out of the ordinary flavours, options like sundays and cream topped ice creams, etc (and possibly they also do pancakes, but I forget)
I believe this one has also just installed one of those self-service Internet kiosks, which is handy, as I didn't see any Internet cafe in town, and didn't notice where the library is.

Too many nice flavours to pick just one!
Their waffle cone ice creams with cream on top would probably have to be my choice.

Healesville Grand Hotel: Pub food & fine dining combined
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Grand Hotel is as its name suggests, a rather Grand Hotel. I particularly like the outside appearance, but inside is very nice too.

When I've dined here I usually go for the seafood, like fried Calamari or King Prawns with chips and salad, which is great. We didn't get to eat here this trip (I think it was all booked out) but the special of the day advertised outside was Atlantic Salmon for $15.50, which is a very good deal for Salmon, and a good deal also for this pub, whose main meals from memory range between about A$13-$17 with seafood at the higher end, of course.

    Healesville Hotel: TWO chef's hats!
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you're a local...then you'll know about The Age Good Food Guide. If they give a restaurant 1 chef hat..it's excellent...but if it's 2 or 3? it's close to heaven. We found out the Healesville Hotel has 2 hats...and had to jump on the bandwagon. We heard the degustation meal at nite was the way to go...but we cooked at our cabin at night...so we did lunch here on a Sunday.

The place was lively and buzzing...the service was unbelievable...and the food? well..it definitely deserves 2 chef's hats. They serve some of the best wine of the valley...and it's certainly...well worth your stop!!...ENJOY!

Healesville Hotel Dining Room: Foodies Mecca in the Yarra
  • Satisfaction:
  • During the four trips we have made to the Yarra Valley in recent years , we have based ourselves at Healesville at the Yarra Gables Motel and we have eaten at least once per trip at the Healesville Hotel Dining Room. Based on the half dozen or so meals we have eaten here, I highly recommend the establishment and its ancillary food outlets the front bar & the adjoining Produce Store which is a good choice for breakfast or morning tea.
The dining room features a very large map of the Yarra Valley on one wall so you can plan your next day's activities while you dine. The room is heated by two fire places during winter which is usually when we visit the area. The French woven chairs give the room a Paris bistro feel. I'm sure the style of cooking reinforces that feeling.
Service is spot-on without being overbearing. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful with wine selection.
The menu features lots of local produce some of which can be purchased next door and at the butchery adjacent.
Last visit, the starters offered (6) included a Charcuterie Board ($18)all prices AUD, Smoked Buxton Trout ($14), Seared Scallops ($17), Terrine of Confit Pork Belly($16) & Snails ($15).
Mains (5): Panfried Snapper ($32), Rabbit ($34), Black Angus Eye Fillet ($38). 4 Sides are offered to those requiring extra sustinence.
The Desserts (4) & the recommended wines all sounded great for those with a sweet tooth.
Wines are available by the glass (Choice of 20+) $5-13. The range of bottled wine is extensive and includes many local wines with age and other regions of Australia and international wines. Prices range from $25 upwards. It is afterall a pub so there is a good range of beers.
Vegetarians are catered for and the back entrance to the room is near ground level so access by wheelchair is possible. There is an out door eating zone for summer brunches and warm evenings.

Every meal that we have eaten here has been better than "just good".
This time Madam chose the Smoked Trout served with kipfer potatos, avocado&creme fraise, chives & Yarra valley salmon roe while he could not pass up the Charcuterie Board with terrine, Lyonnaise sausage, parfait, black pudding, cured meats and relishes/bread to suit.
For mains we chose the Snapper & the Loin of Rabbit stuffed with local mushrooms, rabbit cannelloni, savoy cabbage & seeded mustard jus.
We chose to drink wines by the glass including Chandon Curvee Riche for starters and Wedgetail Pinot Noir. We did not require sides nor did we try the desserts but other diners seemed more than satisfied with theirs. Bill came to $160 which include 10% tip.
The following evening we returned to the H H to eat in the bar. The food there was a little more straight forward, less expensive but none the less, coming from the same kitchen, of superb quality.

Mt Rael Retreat: On Top of the World
  • Satisfaction:
  • We try to eat someplace different everytime we go out...b/c there's so much we want to see and do in our 4 years here in australia...but Mt Rael has been a revisit THREE TIMES!

    We absolutely love this place....

After a day of sampling wines...this is a great place for lunch or dinner. This restaurant sits on top of the hill...and overlooks the entire yarra valley.

The view is amazing...but the food and wine is some of the best we've had here in victoria.

We haven't stayed here...but the resort and spa looks nice....but definitely book b/c they're often booked out.

This fine dining restaurant may be a little on pricey but the 180 degree panoramic view of the Yarra Valley is more than worth the extra dollars.

The menu changes with the season but expect to see fresh regional produce (local lamb, cheese, wines etc). Check out the website for full details on brunch, dinner and wine menus.

Be sure to make a reservation as this stylish retreat gets booked out quite quickly. If it's warm, ask for a table out on the patio.

I can never go past a juicy fillet steak!

Various in Main Street of town: Tea Rooms, Cafes, Takeaways
tea rooms & little art gallery - Healesville
tea rooms & little art gallery

In the main street, Healesville has a variety of eating venues, from Cafes to pubs, to several takeaways. We didn't have time to try out more than one, so I'm only judging the buildings by outside appearances here, and this one is the one I found most quaint, the only Tea Rooms I noticed in town.
