One of the many heritage villages to be found in Victoria and somewhat unsong as Sovereign Hill in Ballarat gets all the plaudits. Its certainly not as glamorous as Soverign Hill - no hoardes of extras wandering the streets in period costume (although there are a few re-enactments and activities arranged in the printing press, the blacksmith etc). But then it's half the entry price.
Coal Creek celebrates coal mining rather than the halycon days of the gold rush and the site is built on an original black coal mine, recreating the time between 1870-1920. It's set in bushland and there's a steam train that runs through the site. It's low key but interesting as a result - and a great setting adds to the attractions.
Open 364 days of the year (closed Christmas day), 10am - 4.30pm.
Entry: AUD$15 adult, $7.50 kids, $10 concession. Family ticket of 2 adults & up to 4 kids - $35.
Coal Creek is to be found in the town of Korumburra on the South Gippsland Highway about 30kms inland from Inverloch.

The Gippsland area of Victoria is one of the wettest parts of the state and therefore one of the greenest parts. Dairy farming and crops are abundant in the gentle undulating landscape, small towns dot the area. You can easily lose yourself in the area, taking small roads that seem to lead somewhere - and that's part of the joy here. You're never far from the sea and yet the verdant greens of the interior are equally stunning.

On the road to Venus Bay from Inverloch, the road runs alongside the river Tarwin - a calm, muddy brown meandering river. 15kmd from Inverloch is Tarwin Lower - a small town that attracts fishermen in their droves as well as bird watchers - the coastal marine park and the stunning alluvial plain of the river being the ome of hundres of different birds. For the less initiated, Tarwin Lower Hotel on the banks of the river is apparently a preferred stop for a beer and a decent lunch to many (we didn't try it).
