Oviously not the one I was on! by aussiedoug If visiting Melbourne from another Australian city, my recommendation is to fly with Virgin Blue. Their flight crews are absolutely fantastic. The very best of Aussie friendliness & helpfulness. Also I've been able to get the best prices with them. Just a few dollars cheaper than QANTAS when I've done a website comparison. On my most recent trip to Melbourne my basic coast was $69 down & $79 back, but with Fuel Surcharge it come to $169. That's a "Blue Saver" fare. When you visit the website you can choose what type of fare you want & put in the dates & times of day you want to travel. When you process everything the will send you a confirmation email that you should print off & take with you to check in along with your photo i.d. No photo I.D. no check in. Simple as that. We've flown domestically with QANTAS with the girls to Adelaide & they were very good too, but I've flown with Virgin Blue my last few flights within Australia & I'll keep travelling with them. by ATXtraveler If I could only count how many times Sarah and I were in and out of this airport of the course of two years! Thanks to business and pleasure travel, I can honestly say I know this airport like the back of my hand. Melbourne's Tullamarine International Airport is most likely the Southern Most International Gateway to the rest of the world. Although Christchurch NZ probably launches airplanes further south to Antarctica, Melbourne truly has a great international routing system. Along with all the major Capital Cities in Australia, you can also reach many international destinations. Indonesia on JetStar, UAE on Emirates, London on BA or QF, Thailand on Thai, Manila on Philippines Air, KL on Malaysian, Singapore on Singapore Air, Hong Kong on Cathay, Shanghai on China Eastern, and multiple others. There are also direct flights from the US to LAX and SFO on United and Qantas. Leave a Comment

Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) is Melbourne's main airport. If you are flying in from an international destination this is the airport you will land at (as well as 'most' domestic flights as well). When travelling to/from Europe I have gone through Melbourne. I have flown with Singapore and Malaysia airlines. And I have to say, of the two, that I preferred flying with Singapore airlines - I thought their selection of entertainment was better, and service was better as well (this is from the point of view of someone flying economy). Before departing for an international flight, it is recommended that you arrive 3 hours prior to your departure time. All check in counters are labeled clearly and are easy to find. Boarding and getting through customs is fairly hassle free, although when coming back into Melbourne I found them to be very strict on their bag checks - so make sure you don't have anything (fruits/wood products... whatever) that you shouldn't have. Melbourne airport also has a lot of good shops in their Duty Free section. Plenty of drinks (alcoholic/non-alcohlic), perfumes, chocolates, beauty products... plus souvenirs, magazines, books, there is plenty to keep you occupied here while waiting for your flight. To get to and from the airport there is a bus that leaves from Southern Cross Station - Skybus (and also stops at some city hotels - see website below for more information). There are also buses that come to the International/Domestic terminals for if you are going to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo or other regional areas. Leave a Comment

"Spirit of Salty" (taken by Craig Murray) by eviltooth Virgin Blue offers the best deal within Australia if you buy your tix online. Check out their website. You can also make reservation by phone but it's a bit more expansive than online booking. I flown on Virgin Blue from Melbourne to Canberra in March 2002, nice service, no delay, no hassle. :) I would like to thank Mr Craig Murray for giving me the permission to use his photo of the aircraft. Side note, if you like aviation photos, visit airliners.net, that's where I came across the pic. Leave a Comment

Pacific Blue Meal by knerten I flew in from Christchurch, NZ and setlled for Pacific Blue since they were the cheapest. The backdraw: An insanely early flight, leaving at 6.30, and with having to arrive 90 minutes before that and getting up in time to make it to the airport, you know what that means... Anyway, this is a low-cost airline, with flight attendants making jokes all the times, and even involving the passengers in party games. I'm not so much in the mood for these things when I'm travelling, but OK, as long as it saves me money I will keep up with it. The food was nice though, even though I had to buy it: 10 dollars fro a sandwich and orange juice. Mind you, they accept Oz and NZ dollars on a 1:1 basis and paying with NZ dollars gives you more value. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

SingaporeAirlines by xuessium This is one busy sector. Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Emirates, Austrian Airlines & British Airways all fly direct from Singapore to Melbourne. The direct journey takes about 6.5-7 hours. Other airlines also fly to Melbourne with a transit stop. They are Australian Airlines (Denpasar, Bali), Malaysian Airlines (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Garuda Indonesia (Denpasar, Bali) and Royal Brunei Airways (Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei). Leave a Comment

by keeweechic Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport is 22 kms (14 miles) north-west of the city centre. There is a shuttle bus service running at half hour intervals throughout the day and a taxi stand outside the main terminal building. It is cheaper for two people to travel by taxi as the shuttle service is quite expensive. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Airplane by Sweetberry1 The best and easiest way to travel to and from Melbourne is by airplane. (Tullamarine Airport) You have a choice of.. Qantas, Jetstar, or Virginblue airlines.. (The latter two are no frills airlines, with much lower airfare prices.) www.qantas.com.au www.jetstar.com.au www.virginblue.com.au Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

by Adeline_Foo We took the British Airways Boeing 747-400 flight to Melbourne. The aircraft is quite big but I find it a little cramp. Each individual seat has a TV with movie channels. Food and service is ok. It took about 7 hours from Singapore to Melbourne. TRAMS. On 11th November 1885, the first cable tramline running from Spencer Street to Richmond was officially opened. By 1983, Melbourne had 684 trams running on 230kms of track and today Melbourne is one of the world's few cities to still operate a tram system. The tram service offers a safe and leisurely way of seeing the city surronds. Just board a tram, get off wherever you choose to take in some sightseeing and continue to your chosen destination. A Daily Zone 1 ticket (good choice for visitors) costing AUD4.60 allows you an unlimited number of trips a day. The daily tickets must be pre-bought at selected outlets (chemists, newsagents etc) as you cannot purchase a daily ticket on the tram. Look out for the Metcard Flag which is displayed outside all retail outlets selling tickets. These tickets can also be bought from vending machines at railway stations. Everytime you board a tram, you musy validate your ticket by inserting it into the vending machine. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane
