 | | | | Queen Victoria Market | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The Queen Victoria Market is a great place for bargain shoppers. You can find literally everything here from fresh fish and fruit to clothes and art. There is also a food court. Night markets are open in the summer, from the end of November to mid-February. Trading hours are 6 AM - 2 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 AM - 6 PM on Fridays, 6 AM - 3 PM on Saturdays, and 9 AM - 4 PM on Sundays. The market is closed Mondays, Wednesdays, and major holidays. The Market is one of Melbourne's most historical sites, opening in 1878 as a livestock market, and is also a major tourist attraction. You can take a 2-hour historical tour of the market for AU$16.50. The Foodies Tour offers a chance to taste some of the fresh foods offered at the markets. It leaves at 10 AM every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and costs $22. Check the website for more info and special events. | | | | *: Melbourne Central ('The Cone') | Tip Rating: | | | | |
In the recent couple of years Melbourne Central (also known as 'the Cone' due it's cone shaped ceiling) has undergone many improvements. There are now many new and great shops throughout this shopping complex - which covers two city blocks. Floor after floor filled with clothing stores, gift stores, jewelry, games, books, music, homeware, a food court, cinema, ten pin bowling, fitness gym and there are also some bars and clubs on the upper levels as well. If you're looking for some clothes - there are some great clothes by Australian fashion designers here - like Peter Alexander and Morrissey. There are also a number of phone shops here (Telstra, Optus, Virgin, 3) if you are looking for a phone/sim card/ or to switch to an Australian network. Underneath the centre of the cone there is a large pocket watch, that on every hour opens up to reveal some Australian fauna icons and plays music for a couple of minutes. You will find that a lot of kids like to sit and watch this. Situated throughout Melbourne Central are touch screens which you use as directories to find a store you want (either by type of store or by store name). * Also, through walkways connecting buildings, you can walk straight from Melbourne Central into Myer (department store) without having to go outside (which is great on cold and windy days).
A couple of the stores I like are: Borders (books/CDs/DVDs - a chain store found in the USA and UK as well), Sportsgirl (young women's clothing) and Billabong (young women's and men's clothing)
Depends on each store Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Swanston StreetDirections: If on the city centre loop (tram) get off at the library on Swanston St. It is right across the road from there.
