If you come to melbourne in winter go to a game of australian rules football at the MCG. You won't need to know the rules, just ask the person standing next to you what is going on and they will be happy to inform you, probably in a colorful way.
Everyone knows the MCG. Make sure in winter you bring plenty of warm clothes and bring in some food. Inside it is really expensive. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: 5 minutes away from city center

The MCG, aka the G, is home to Victoria's sporting heart and its passion for Australian Rules Football aka Aussie Rules. The ground holds more than 80,000 people and is a fantastic place to come and watch cricket or aussie rules. The occassional game of rugby is played here but as the ground is so big the payers get a bit lost in the distance. I've been to the MCG several times with my first experience in 1977 to the then Gillette Cup cricket final between Victoria & Western Australia. A hugely memorable experience for several reasons. More recently I have attended an Aussie vs NZ cricket one day game at full capacity - just a superb atmosphere. The MCG has the famous seating area of Bay 13 where the guys that like a few drinks tend to congregate. If the game is a tiny bit boring, these guys will keep you entertained with their chants and general behaviour. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

There are numerous companies throughout Melbourne which provide hot air balloon rides over the city at sunrise (or if you fancied somewhere greener, the Yarra Valley). It is a unique and fabulous way of seeing the city as the sun rises, and best of all there's a champagne breakfast waiting for you on landing (at various hotels/restaurants throughout the city, depending on what company you use). Obviously weather pays an important part so your flight could be rescheduled, but the companies will always keep you well-informed. For those of you who are worried that you may be in for a bumpy ride, I was surprised at how smooth it all was - after all - you are just floating in the air! Cost: The cost for a flight and breakfast ranges between $320-350 per adult depending on the company. Yarra Valley flights are cheaper (generally around $300 per adult). Please see the relevant websites for more information on flight times, breakfast details, departure points etc. The main websites are: Balloon Over Melbourne Global Ballooning Hot Air Ballooning Kavanagh Balloons We personally used Hot Air Ballooning for our flight over the Yarra Valley, which was lovely. A friend has used Global Ballooning for Melbourne and equally raves about it! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

A great tip for tennisfans: in the second week of the Australian Open you can just rock up to the Melbourne Park National Tennis Centre and buy a grounds pass for just $15. You won't be able to enter the Rod Laver Arena though, but I managed to see Martina Hingis and Monica Seles in action on one of the smaller courts. Bring plenty of suncream and a hat! In january of each year the australian open tennis tournament is held in melbourne. It is a very popular event and finals tickets can be quite rare. It is a fantastic way to spend a day if you are around that time.

Melbourne is the home of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. The track is located in Albert Park and runs close to the edge of the lake there. The GP is held every March (the first weekend). The F1 cars are out on the Friday for pratice laps and the Saturday for qualifying and they race on the Sunday, when the F1 cars are not on the track there are other events such as celebrity races, V8 super cars, Formula Ford, etc. Get a grandstand seat if you can, because the standing views aren't great.
Earplugs are highly recommended. Leave a Comment

Telstra Dome, once known as Colonial Stadium, is the home of Australian Football from late March to late August, and has also held cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, soccer, concerts, and exhibitions. The retractable dome will be open or closed depending on the weather. You can get a tour of the stadium on Monday - Friday at 11 AM, 1 PM, and on non-event days you can also go at 3 PM. Tours cost AU$13 for adults, $10 for students/concession, and $5 for children. Check the website for more information and a schedule of events. Leave a Comment
