Football at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) is something which shouldn't be missed. Grab a pie from the pie boy, pick a team and just yell along with everyone else!
There is nothing like the atmosphere at the 'G and crowd watching can sometimes be as fun as the game itself! A good match like Carlton vs Collingwood, Essendon vs Carlton, Richmond vs Collingwood always draw a good crowd - and for a price just slightly higher than a movie ticket - offers a few hours of high entertainment.
Australian Fottball League. Better known as the 'footy'.
The footy brings out the best and the worst of people. Everyone is EXTREMELY loyal to thier team. You get to eat meat pie & sauce, drink beer and scream and cheer like a madman! How Aussie can you get?
Yarra Park and Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)
The MCG is home to the Aussie footy game...not the traditional football we all know... It's amazing to attend one of the games, it's real fun and u get to know people.
Some interesting buildings around the Yarra Park for those interested in contemporary architecture.
If you like sport go and watch an AFL game!
AFL is Australian Rules Football. If you like sport and would like to watch a game that is unique to Australia then this would be the game to watch. Melbourne is the home of AFL and it has a bit of a cult following down here. What do we all talk about on Monday at work during the footy season......the weekend games of course! :-)
If you are in Melbourne between March and September, chances are you would be able to catch a game on a Saturday or Sunday if you are interested.
The Cricket or Football at the MCG
The Melbourne Cup
Melbourne is sports-mad......most people would bet on two flies crawling up a wall so Melbourne is the best place to see sport......the crowds are passionate (but not dangerous or unruly), the atmosphere is electric and the sport is entertaining.
Imagine being in a sporting arena packed with yelling fans - the best football matches to attend are ones between traditional rivals, such as Carlton & Collingwood, Essendon and Hawthorn. At these matches, they get 50-60,000 fans so you can't help but be taken with the occasion!!
The best Cricket to see is a one-day international (a limited overs match) - especially Australia versus someone else in a Day-Night fixture.....
At the MCG, the best place to be is in the lower areas of the Great Southern Stand or in the area known as Bay 13. It is at the far end of the arena, away from the city.
Melbourne Cup - Australias Richest Horserace (first Tuesday in November) stops the nation at 2.30pm.....
A great day to get a picnic, get dressed up (or dressed down!) and get racing!!!
A visit to melbourne would be incomplete without going to the famous Melbourne Cricket ground.. it is the jewel in every Melbournites crown!!!It is the home of course to cricket but also hosts many other national and international sporting events..I went there to an Australian Rules football match(I am not a lover of spectator sports!!!)not really expecting to have a great time..
It started with huge banners being brought on and the players jumping thru them(obviously made of paper...)Mascots for each side running around the oval pitch.. From then on i enjoyed myself.. watching the sidesmen/umpires was a joy.. they have almost robotic movements.. and the points scored escalated alarmingly to my novice ears..The players in their cut off sleeve sweaters appear to be aggressive but i was told , on good authority , it is all in love!!!!!It was good fun.. even the traditional meat pie at half time!!!!!!
I think their is also a museum of sporting attributes of many of Australia's famous sons..(please check)
