Those who love driving will be delighted to travel along Great Ocean Road, which provides look-out points wherever there are great sights to see. The road is windy at times but the traffic are light and the sights fantastic. We stopped over at Apollo Bay for the night and enjoyed a very peaceful sleep with the sound of unending waves hitting the shore. With the cool autumn in the air, it is hard to get up in the morning. Breakfast is hard to find at Apollo Bay unless you take bread...
Just after Apollo Bay, there is a small pond where a colony of sea-gulls and other seabirds thrive. Just watching them looking for food and flying around took us hours before we embarked on the scenic drive....
We reached the Apostles eventually and the sights and sounds worth the efforts taken to drive there. The wind was strong and we were careful not to let our clothes and caps swept away....

The 12 Apostles are a series of giant limestone rock stacks that rise from the Ocean. Unfortunately by the time we reached them there was a hailstorm and gale force winds. However, we're British, and if there's one thing we can cope with it's rain, so we braved the conditions and even managed to get a few snaps of the famous 12 Apostles. Not quite the same as the lovely postcard images you see in the shops but it makes us chuckle when we see it.

I've played a bit of golf in my time and had to contend with various water traps, ditches, bunkers etc. But at Anglesea Golf Club they must have the ultimate deterrent to going into the rough, herds of Kangaroos. The Kangaroos were there before the Golf Course, and have seen no reason to leave. It's not easy getting near them, but it's well worth the detour from the Ocean Road to see them. I wonder what the penalty is for a ball in the pouch !?!?

The Great Ocean Road starts about an hours drive from Melbourne in the town of Torquay, and stretches along way down the coast to Geelong. On the way it takes in some stunning coastal scenery (12 Apostles), some quaint seaside towns (Torquay, Lorne), long deserted sandy beaches (Anglesea, Lorne) and amazing wildlife (Koalas, Parrots, Kangaroos). Guide books recommend doing the tour over a couple of days, but as time was limited we did it in a day, and although it was quite tiring, it can be done and hey you can always sleep when you get home !

This is another view of The 12 Apostles when we were there. There just happened to be a thunder storm blowing in so half the area was sunny and the other half was darkening up. We got out of there before the rains came!
This is definitely a whole day's trip, but the variety of scenery is very impressive.

Leaving from Melbourne we traveled down the East side of the bay, crossed on the ferry and then headed down the Ocean Road and made it to Camperdown to spend the night. From there we drove to Ballarat and spent the day at Sovreign Hill- another attraction well worth the time and effort.

Ater we got our car and picked up some supplies we drove over to the south west coast . The Great Ocean Road goes from Anglsea to Warrnambool.
There are many places to pull off the road to take pictures and enjoy the surf.
Port Campbell National Park is the amazing part of thios drive, with its natural rock sculptures.

Given a road this long...and a drive so long just to get there...it makes it all worth when u finally get there to see the 12 apostles.
It would be a much better experience to drive there on your own than to go on a chartered tour since the charter tour only brings u to the 12 apostles and nothing else.....
Moreover, there's much more to the great ocean road other than just the 12 apostles!

The twelve apostles are sandstone/rock pillars proruding from the sea that have been carved by the weather for many decades and is a must see. I needs to be mentioned on its own even though part of the Great Ocean Drive.

This road was an Australian government initiative and it offers beautiful views, and is pretty much a must if you have time. Lots of little towns on the way offer you interesting places to see. It starts at Torquay and stretches along the coast and through the Otway Rainforest to Warrnambool. Keep an eye out for the wild life we saw many kangaroes and other smaller animals that is indigenous to Australia.
