One of the most famous sports stadiums in the world. Ironically known as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, yet plays host to any number of events - numerous AFL games throughout the season, including one (if not the) most important event in Australia - the AFL Grand Final, the Boxing Day Test Cricket match, the 1956 Olympics and formed a central part of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Capacity varies according to the event, but 93,000+ recently saw Australia beat Greece in a soccer game. Amazingly, it is only a couple of kms from the centre of the city and forms the centre piece of the 'sporting' island of Olympic park, the Rod Laver Arena (home of the Australian Tennis Open) and the Vodaphone Arena. Tours of the ground are available, Monday-Thursday, 10am-3pm on non-event days (start at the South Stand) Leave a Comment Directions: From the Swanston St Bridge, the MCG can be clearly seen, as can the footpaths that will take through numerous parks and riverside walksWebsite: www.mcg.org.au

Melbourne Cricket Ground by eviltooth Home to major sporting events, the MCG has traditionally thrilled millions around the world with events such as the Olympic Games, Test Cricket and Australian Football's incomparable Grand Final on the last Saturday in September. Take the MCG tour to learn the sporting history of Melbourne, departing regularly from 10a.m. to 3p.m. I'm not a fan of Footy and the only time I went to the MCG was for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Couldn't afford to go to Sydney then, but the football semi-final (Cameroon vs. Chile) was held in Melbourne. I still remember the crowd and throngs of Chilean supporters flown in all the way from South America cheering their team and I was the only one around supporting the Cameroon team, which went on to grab the gold in the final in Sydney. Great game. Leave a Comment

by PrincessPark Football at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) is something which shouldn't be missed. Grab a pie from the pie boy, pick a team and just yell along with everyone else! There is nothing like the atmosphere at the 'G and crowd watching can sometimes be as fun as the game itself! A good match like Carlton vs Collingwood, Essendon vs Carlton, Richmond vs Collingwood always draw a good crowd - and for a price just slightly higher than a movie ticket - offers a few hours of high entertainment. Leave a Comment Directions: The MCG is hard to miss. It's absolutely massive and is located in Jolimont, east of the city. You can get there by catching any train that goes to Richmond or Jolimont/MCG stations, or by specially mOther Contact: The MCG seats around 90,000 so i

by Larnie If you've never been to Melbourne and it's footy season (and you are a sports fan), you can not go by without catching an Aussie Rules game (AFL). What better place to experience your first game than the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Even if you are not a huge sports fan, the experience of a game at the MCG is one you won't forget. A ticket can cost anywhere from $15 for a childs ticket right up to about $60 for the best seats. Leave a Comment

There is nothing better - being in the middle of the best stadium in Australia during a football match. If you want to experience part of Melbourne - come during the months of April to September each year. This is when matches are played in the Australian Football League (AFL). Melbourne has the best stadium in Australia - the MCG. The best matches to go to are between the melbourne clubs - Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond (the big 4), Melbourne, St Kilda, Kangaroos. The "Big 4" get the biggest crowds when they play each other, no matter where they are on the football ladder. Essendon/Collingwood average 60,000 - 90,000 etc. Address: Jolimont, MelbourneDirections: Within walking distance of the city. Walk down Flinders Street, head right - you can't miss it. Just follow the crowds!!

The MCG by Jez79 A trip to Melbourne wouldn't be complete for any sport lover without seeing a live game of football. Victoria is the home of AFL, Australian Rules football, which has become popular across the nation. AFL is a 360 degree game, with a ball similar to that used in rugby. There a 4 goal posts, with a kick between the middle two constituting a 6 point goal and one point if the ball misses the main goal posts. AFL is a fast paced game, extending over 4 terms. The MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) is the biggest sporting venue in the city, and said to be the best stadium in the country for watching AFL. Each year around 100 000 football fans congregate to the MCG to watch the grand final. Victorians are passionate about their football, so the atmosphere is always spectacular. For information and timetables you can check ut the official AFL website listed below, or contact the MCG. Leave a Comment

Go to the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), to see the footy in winter, cricket in summer. If you do go to the MCG for the footy, try a night game where at the end of it, they'll usually let you run onto the ground where you should look up at the light towers...it's an amazing sight. Leave a Comment

by cutestmidget Australian Rules Football Australian Football League (AFL) is a 'way of life' in Australia, just as soccer (ok ok football to you fussy ones) is in many other countries. Even if you don't understand the rules, it's worth going along to watch a game, just for the experience and atmosphere. This is Melbourne's dynamic personality at its best (and sometimes its worst, depending on who won!). It's certainly best to go with a local, who can explain things, and who you can laugh at when they start jumping up and down and yelling. :) Leave a Comment Directions: You can attend games in Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (otherwise known as the MCG - take a train out to Richmond station), Optus Oval (in Carlton), or Colonial Stadium (Other Contact: The AFL pre-s

by Janellabel MCG - Melbourne Cricket Ground also know to the locals as the 'G'. It was the home of the 1956 Olympics and recently held the soccer (football) for the 2000 Games. It is here in summer we have big international cricket tests played and one day matches. One of the best to go to is the Boxing Day match after christmas which is one of the biggets games of the season. In winter we have Australian Rules football played here which is a unique game to Australia. There is a tour of this ground which is very interesting and also here is the Australian Sporting Museum.
