| Melbourne Zoo tips and photos posted by real travelers and Melbourne locals. • 52 Photos • 28 Reviews See all Melbourne Things To Do | | Melbourne Melbourne Zoo Reviews | 1 - 10 of 28 | | The zoo is a great place to spend a day if you're in Melbourne. There are three 'loops' you can walk through and each one will take about an hour to an hour and a half. Make sure you get a map when you enter the zoo - it will also give you the feeding time for some of the animals, and this is a great way to learn more about them and to ask any of the zoo staff some questions. When I went today, I was looking at a clouded leopard who was sitting at the back of her cage. One of the zoo staff called out to her and after a bit she made her way down to the front of the cage and I was introduced to 'Nona' - she was absolutely beautiful. I learnt that the clouded leopards are great at climbing trees (that is why they have such big paws, but short legs) and they have the largest teeth for a cat in relation to the cats body size. There are hundreds of animals here: Elephants, Tigers, Lions, Orang-utans (who will soon have a new home), monkeys, gorillas, seals, polar bears, giraffes, bears, lemurs, meerkats, macaws, peacocks (who just roam around freely), red pandas, butterflies (in the butterfly house), plus snakes and other reptiles as well. And of course a lot of Australian animals: koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus, echidnas, platypus... There is just so much to see! Plus a lot of the paths within the different 'zones' are mainly dirt tracks with trees and other plants that reflect the habitat of the creatures around them. So around the kangaroos and emus are a lot of Australian bush flora. There are a few drink and food areas around the zoo. Although there are plenty of areas for you to sit down and have a picnic if you want to save some money and bring your own lunch. Free guided tours are available from 10am-3pm every day. *Admission* Adults: $22.00 Children: $11.00 (children under 4 years are free) *Opening Times* Open every day of the year (including all holidays) Sun - Sat: 9am-5pm. The zoo is open for 'twilight' hours in the summer - see website for details. Zoos are never my favourite place but they're a great place to take the kids and you can keep them entertained for hours. The oldest zoo in Australia, thankfully there has been a complete overall in the attitude to the whole concept of zoos and Melbourne is moving towards the modernisation of its facilities (in fact the old 19th century brick and metal cages are now part of the exhibit to emphasise just how much things have moved on). They haven't been able to complete everything yet so there is a way to go, but you know there is a move in the right direction, for example. when you are not guaranteed seeing the tigers as a result of the dense bamboo and other foliage which forms part of the enclosure. Its a progressive place - during the summer months there's even live music at the Zoo (Zoo Twilights).- January-March. A$20 entrance, A$9.50 kids. Family tickets available (costs dependent on # of kids). Open 9.30 - 5pm, 365 days of the year. The Melbourne Zoo is a fantastic day out. You can meet the keepers & learn info about the animals. You get to experience the wonder and diversity of the world's wildlife with a walk through the award-winning Melbourne Zoo. More than 300 species are on display every day of the year in a brilliant botanical setting. Walk through the lush surrounds of the Asian and African Rainforests and be amazed by the spectaular tree-top viewing at the new Orang-utan Sanctuary. The new elephant enclosure is very good. There are currently works going on around the Zoo (Dec '07). A new water sanctuary for the seals will be open in 2009. Sleep overs can be arranged at certain times of the year. Zoo - Tigers... This incredible tiger had a forrest encloser. He was enormous, I couldn't believe they get so big. Two tigers were first introduced to the Melbourne Zoo in 1875 as a gift. They came by a steamer from Bombay but were not in the greatest condition when they arrived. One unfortunately died but the other surived and became a great attraction. One of the best places to take children on holiday is the Melbourne Zoo. Children love animals, especially those crowd favourites like monkeys/apes, elephants and lions. The Melbourne Zoo has many varieties of animals, including: Snakes, crocodiles, giraffes, lions, zebras, kangaroos, elephants, platypus, lizards, monkeys, birds, penguins, dingos, tigers, koalas, bears, seals and many, many more. One of my favourite sections of the zoo is the Butterfly House . It is fully interactive as soon as you walk through the door. There are about 800 individual butterflies in the Butterfly House at any time, and they fly everywhere, landing on plants, railings and even people! You can watch butterflies up close, because the plants they land on are right there next to you, above you and all around you. Admission Prices: Adults (16 years and over) - $18.00 Children (4 to 15 years, children under 4 years free) - $9.00 Children with disabilities (under 16 years of age) - $4.00 Family Passes (2 Adults & 2 Children) - $45.00 (2 Adults & 3 Children) - $50.00 (2 Adults & 4 Children) - $55.00 (2 Adults & 5 Children) - $60.00 Concession (including pensioners and health care cardholders) - $13.50 Group Discounts 10% off full adult rate is available for pre-arranged tours of 20 or more people. 20% off full adult rate is available for pre-arranged tours of 50 or more people. After Taronga in Sydney, the Melbourne Zoo is the next best in the country. Here, one can see a wide variety of animals, native and otherwise. Most important though are the collections of native aussie animals such as the Red Kangaroo pictured. They are the worlds largest Marsupial (animals with pouches). And they are found largely in the central and western part of the country. A fully grown male can measure 5 feet in height.

Its years since I went to the zoo but over the years it has grown and improved and is Australia’s oldest. It was opened in 1862 and offers several historic features such as the Main Walk and an early 20th century menagerie exhibit which are in the historic area. The zoo was modeled on the London Zoo is believed to be the 11th oldest zoo in the world. The zoo is set on 55 acres close to the center of Melbourne. There are more than 350 animal species from Australia and around the world. Open daily from 0900 - 1700.
