Melbourne's new museum opened in early 2001, and boasts many wonderful and unique artifacts - from PharLap memorabilia (even his stuffed and mounted body) to Ned Kelly's armour (one of Victoria's most notorious 19th Century criminals). Put aside at least 4-5 hours to really enjoy the exhibits.
Melbourne Museum, Carlton Gardens and Royal Exhibition Building
A really huge one. It's the biggest museum in the southern hemisphere, so u may expect to spend at least one day there...it's even got a forest inside!!
If you are in a rush it's still worth visiting or even just having a look of the outside of the building, it's real nice architecture. The Carlton Gardens (the setting of the museum) are nice too

very visual, very interactive and great for kids and adults. look out for any specific exhibits - they are usually pretty good.
