The place to be for people-watchers

Cafe rooftop, Acland Street, St Kilda

The main attractions of St Kilda are Acland Street, St Kilda Rd, the promenade & beach, the weekend markets & Luna Park.

I'm an avid people-watcher and enjoy the weekend markets held every Sunday. You can slowly make your way through the stalls of jewellery, crafts, homewares, food & clothing starting at the bottom of St Kilda Road and around to Acland Street.

Acland Street is reknown for the beautiful french patisseries and the window displays are captivating (and enticing)! There are some great cafes on Acland Street to sit in the window and watch the passing parade.

I went to go to Luna Park but it was school holidays at the time and swamped with kids, queues and chaos. I also noticed that it was fairly expensive. Around $6-$10 for one ride. Not cheap.

St Kilda Rd is reknown to attract the more undesirable types, especially at night time. However, over the years it has really been cleaned up and now it's just a melting pot of interesting characters. An array of great, relaxed, stylish bars exist on St Kilda Rd. See nightlife for more details.

St. Kilda is one of the most interesting areas around Melbourne. It definitely has a wide variety of people and attractions and is home to one of the city's most popular beaches. There are some very good restaurants located here, along with some bars. St. Kilda pier is a nice place to walk, and you can even see penguins there.

Kites at St Kilda with Melbourne Skyline

St Kilda is just a short trip on the tram from the centre of Melbourne, and is well worth the trip. It's a typical seaside town from years gone by. It looks like it's seen better days, but is all the nicer for it. Take a stroll round the hustle and bustle of Ackland Street with it's numerous Restaurants of all persuasions. Take a ride on the old wooden Rollercoaster at Luna Park, or just stroll along the prom or sit on the beach.

St.Kilda Road

St. Kilda Road has always been a lovely road to explore from. Lots of trees line the road, and there are parks and gardens around this area.. making it a very pleasant area to spend some time in.

Sea Baths..

In the 19th century, the St Kilda Sea Baths were used by a wide cross-section of society. Back then swimming at an open beach during the day was prohibited, and sea baths were the only option.

The redeveloped facility is now called,
The Hepburn St Kilda Sea Baths, and has upstairs and downstairs.

Downstairs...public access facilities.
A heated 25 metre sea water pool.
Hydrotherapy spa pool.
Men's and Women's steam rooms and lounge area.

Upstairs is the private health spa area.
Here you can indulge in the same treatments as those at the Hepburn Springs facility in Daylesford.
Mud and seaweed wraps, facials, personal hydrotherapy and spas, massage, and flotation tanks.

Luna Park

The park’s opening in 1912 was an immediate success and drew very large crowds.
Some of the original attractions included the Scenic Railway roller coaster, the River Caves, the Pharaoh’s Daughter, also known as the Egyptian Theatre, the American Bowl Slide, the Palace of Illusions, the Ferris Wheel, and numerous American slot machines (that used dimes).

Today, Luna Park is still one of the most popular attractions in Melbourne.. A fun day for the young, and the young at heart.

Another view of the Promenade..
This area of St. Kilda is a very popular place for taking that leisurely walk.
There are also many parks and gardens, where you can relax, and just watch the world go by.

Sunday Markets.

There is a great sunday market on the St.Kilda promenade. Lots of interesting things to see and buy.... art, craft, clothing, jewellry, leathergoods, and too many other things to mention.
Worth a visit is you are in the area.
