It's the beaches that are the big attraction of Point Lonsdale - one of the closest open sea beaches to Melbourne. Beauty of Point Lonsdale is that it not particularly developed - the backdrop of the Back (Sea) Beach being sand dunes, the lighthouse and, just round the headland, the fishing pier. When a northerly wind blows, the sea beach is beautifully sheltered.

Drive past the shops to find the Pt Lonsdale Lighthouse. You can't miss it.
A signal station was established on this site in 1852. Signals were hoisted on a flagpole to show the state of the tide at Port Phillip Heads and to communicate with ships.
In 1863 a wooden lighthouse was relocated here with a temporary light, but this was only visible for 7 miles. It operated until 1867.
In 1902 the present lighthouse replaced the wooden one.
It is 21 metres high. The light is 37 metres above sealevel.
The walls are 2metres thick at the base and 1 metre at the top.
In 1950 the base of the lighthouse was altered to provide a viewing platform and signal station.

Drive past the few shops, head towards the lighthouse, but turn off to the left just before you reach the lighthouse parking area. There is a large parking area here where you can admire the views while sitting in the car.
Better still get out of the car and follow the walking track that will take you down to the jetty. From there you can also walk up to the lighthouse.
