Beware the "Rip" if Boating.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The narrow entrance to Port Phillip is known as "The Rip" and is reputed to be one of the most hazardous stretches of navigable water in the world. It has great variations in depth, from reefs that are not covered at low tide to a maximum of 94 metres but this is in a "deep" that runs across the entrance at the edge of a ledge of rock at a general depth of about 9 metres.

While the rise and fall of the tide outside the Heads is 2.5m it is only about 1 metre inside due to the narrowness of the opening limiting the amount of water that can enter or leave the bay in a tidal period. As a result there are very strong tidal "rips" which give the area its name. Even today, small vessels find it advisable not to navigate the Rip against the tide. But there are always those who will try, and wish they hadn't..

All ships entering or leaving Port Phillip Bay must carry a pilot unless her skipper has an "exemption certificate".

Ships regularly passing through the heads is a spectacle not to be missed when visiting the region. There is a lookout from where you get to see the Rip.
The lookout also gives views over to Point Nepean and the Mornington Peninsula.
