AFL - Former Victorian Football League

by ATXtraveler Written Jun 23, 2005

If you are coming to Victoria, you have to attend a Australian Rules Football match! In Melbourne, there is the Melbourne Cricket Ground or MCG to watch the match.

Also, it is important to find which team to cheer for!!

    I chose the Hawthorn Hawks!

Australia Day Races - Hanging Rock National Park

    by leffe3 Updated Nov 17, 2004

You've seen the film 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' and the case of the mysterious (and implied spooky) disappearance of 3 schoolgirls. Now try work out for yourself the case of your own disappearing ready cash (less spooky) at the Hanging Rock Races.

There are two annual meets a year - New Year and Australia Day - and they are really great family days out. Overshadowed by the Volcanic Plug that is Hanging Rock, the National Park hosts a large, friendly crowd with some 7-8 races in the day

Equipment: An esky full of picnic and drink requirements, a sun hat, blanket to sit on and pen to mark your selection. Oh, and plenty of cash LOL.

    A$15 per person entrance

Coming from Canada, we don't see many surfers about. There are many good "surf" beaches to visit in southern Victoria, some will offer lessons and rentals for you to give it a try......or you can just observe, as I did.

    Hiking in Wilson's Promontory

by windsorgirl Updated Aug 6, 2004

There are very well marked trails, and many of them throughout Wilson's Prom National Park. You can do a day hike up Mt. Oberron for a stunning coastal view (see photo on my Intro page) or a day hike to Tongue Point (pictured here). There are also multi day hikes that you can undertake with primitive campsites along the way.

    Snowboarding @ Mt Buller

    by aussiebloke26 Updated Jun 30, 2004

When you head to buller I advise driving to mansfield and catching a bus up the mountain - especially if you are intending on staying a few days. You can park your car at Paulins snow hire and catch a bus which leaves about 8:15am - get there earlier to leave time to hire your gear if you need to.
If you drive to the mountain, when you get there park in the main carpark and catch the horse hill chair lift up the mountain - it drops you off near the best beginners run Burnt Hut but also gives you good access to the rest of the mountain.
The mountain also has a snowboarding park with a half pipe etc.
Check out for fresh snow falls at Website also has all the info you need in planning a trip.

Equipment: Hire you gear from Paulins in Mansfield if you need it - they have a good range of gear, reasonably priced. Can hire chains from the service station accross the road if you are driving up the mountain.

    Flemington Racecourse

by keeweechic Updated Jul 13, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Flemington Racecourse was founded in 1840 and was laid out along the banks of the altwater river. Today it is home of the Victoria Racing Club and host to Australia's greatest horse race, the Tooheys New Melbourne Cup held on November 5th every years. The country literally comes to a standstill for those few minutes of the race. Oaks Day (or Ladies Day) is held the following Thursday. All the finest and well as whackiest garb comes out for the Melbourne Cup Day.

    The Melbourne Cricket Grounds (MCG)

by keeweechic Written Nov 28, 2002

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is a major venue for most sporting and entertainment events that are held in Melbourne. Melburnians are fanatical with their Aussie Rules Footy. Outdoor concerts are also held there from time to time. While I was dragged along to the odd footy match (but in the comfort of a private box), no one had to drag me to one of the concerts there. The MCG is also home to the Australian Gallery of Sport which records Australian sporting history and the Olympic Museum, with memorabilia dating back to the first Olympics in 1896.
