The 12 Apostles

by dlandt

This is the only place along the road I think you should skip, even if the view is really good. Even thpough the scenery is quite beautiful, there are veritable boatloads of tourists, legions of Chinese photo-infantry, lightshows of flashbulbs. Its nuts, people can't even get pictures without elbowing someone else out of the way. Then when you try to drive away in a car, you nearly get crushed by a tour bus. Go very early, maybe make it your first stop. Beat the crowds. Hit any of the other places along the way, but this one is just way too overtrafficked. You might even be able to get a sidelong look at the rock formations from other lookout points inthe same area. Consult your map.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade

by Kate-Me

Many people have this one down as a "must see activity", but I'm afraid I've never been able to see it that way (maybe because I know of other, much better and less touristy spots to see these little fairy penguins). Phillip Island as a whole is well worth visiting (rug up in your winter woollies if you do go - it's often windy and cold - quite an exposed little island) with quite a lot of different animal experiences to be had, which is a plus for it. These other animal attractions include Koalas and seals (though when we were at 'Seal Rocks' even with a telescope you could barely see the seals at all, so I wouldn't rate this one highly either - the rocks are just too far out). I'd recommend a visit to Phillip Island, but skip the fairy penguin parade (unless you love crowds - hundreds of people around you). Instead you could opt to see fairy penguins elsewhere - like Granite Island...

The Penguin Preserve and Koala...

by richiecdisc

The Penguin Preserve and Koala Conservation Centre on Phillip Island is a bit touristy, but the parade of the penguins is kind of fun. If you see it on the way to the Ocean Road, it's not bad, but I wouldn't make a special trip especially if you have seen penguins elsewhere.
