Melbourne has a wonderful system of bike paths that will take you right into the heart of the city. It is also very easy to take your bike onto the trains for longer distances.

By Air : Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport is 22 kms (14 miles) north-west of the city centre. There is a shuttle bus service running at half hour intervals throughout the day and a taxi stand outside the main terminal building. It is cheaper for two people to travel by taxi as the shuttle service is quite expensive.

Melbourne's public transport system is called the Met, which includes trams, trains and buses on the one ticket. Melbourne has one of the largest tram and light-rail networks in the world.

By Taxi : Taxis are numerous but expensive.

By Tram : The free City Circle Tram travels around the city and ties up with other trams, trains and light rail routes around inner Melbourne city. The journey takes you past arcades, shopping malls and some major attractions. Just wait at any of the specially marked tram stops on Flinders, Spencer, LaTrobe or Spring Sts. Trams run in both directions every ten minutes. Daily 10am-sunset Trams run in both directions every ten minutes, seven days a week.

The Metcard - iit's easy to use. The card operates on all Met Trains, Trams and Buses. You can buy a various assortment of cards from ‘short trips’, ‘2 hour trips’, ‘daily’, ‘weekly’.

Bendigo is the home to a collection of some 34 Vintage Trams. They are housed in Australia's oldest operating tramways complex which was built in 1901-3.

Every day 12 Vintage Trams are rostered for the daily Vintage "Talking" Tram Tours. They provide a taped commentary of the history of Bendigo and background on the many grand Victorian buildings.

Cruising the Murray River in Echuca

You can take a cruise along the Murray River on one of six river boats currently operating there. Learn about the old Port of Echuca and the amazing riverboat days. The PS Adelaide was built in Echuca and launched in 1886.It is the third oldest steam driven boat in the world. During most of her 90 years of service as a logging boat, she towed barges laden with redgum logs from nearby forests to the sawmills at Echuca. It had been overhauled and was back in its first day of service the day I cruised on it.

Puffing Billy is a historic Steam Train which still travels on its original mountain track through the wonderfully scenic Dandenong Ranges from Belgrave to Emerald Lake. Just 40kms east of Melbourne.

  • It's a great way to see the Great Ocean Road. It's all inclusive and very laid back.
The driver Will is great and well organized.

  • Whilst Victoria has one of the best public transport systems in Australia, sadly that is not saying a great deal, with limited trainlines connecting the main towns and cities and a complementing bus service, which generally links with arrivals of trains at the more remote destinations. There are some local, privately owned initiatives which also try to improve connections - twice-weekly buses are not unusual in rural Victoria!

Melbourne and suburbs are well serviced - extensive commuter train lines running in several directions, 50 - 60kms out of the CBD.
If you are going Melbourne-Geelong: Melbourne-Ballarat: Melbourne-Bendigo: Melbourne-Traralgon: Melbourne- Wadonga, then you have a relatively straight forward run. Variations on a theme from that, and you start to struggle as far as the trains are concerned.

I've divided Victoria into sections, and will use the same for transport tips.
