When driving from South Australia, the speed limit goes to 100 kph from 110 kph. Beware of speed camera enforcement. Although disabled when I was there, these cameras are ferociously efficient about tagging the unaware. I come from a place where the speed limit is determined by the performance level of yourself and your automobile, as well as the daily traffic jam. Slowing down to Australian levels proved frustrating in the extreme.
Melbourne Driving
by keeweechic
There is a road rule at some intersections in the city area where traffic turning right must do so from the left lane to avoid blocking tram tracks. This involves pulling into the intersection on the left (in front of cars lined up to cross your path) and then when the through traffic is clear, doing your sharp right hand turn from there. A bit daunting when you're not used to it. Look out for the trams if you are driving or cycling.
Crime
by keeweechic
No undue warnings as Victoria is Australia's safest state with crime rates 20% below the national crime rate. There are however always parts of major cities which are less safe especially at night and walking alone should be avoided. Hitchhiking is not recommended.
Total Fire Ban Days
by keeweechic
Parts of Victoria at times have total fire ban days. This is when conditions are particularly dry and the temperatures have been soaring. High winds which blow down from the North also are a contributing factor to flaming any small fires which break out. No camp fires, burning of rubbish or open barbecues may be lit (the latter only if it is close to the house and a hose is in readiness). Only gas or electric bbq’s which within a concrete or brick structure maybe used away from home. All solid fuel appliances, such as wood, heat bead, briquette and charcoal are not allowed to be used. There are fire danger meters throughout the state to show the level of fire danger.
