QantasLink to Broome
  • Tip Rating:
  • Qantas first started in the Queensland outback in 1920. Its unusual name come from the initials of the areas it used to serve back in those early days Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services (QANTAS).

I enjoy flying Qantas and nowdays there are planes of all shapes and sizes that fly all over the world. The jet that we took to Broome is one of the smallest Qantas planes I've been on. They carry about 100 people and the seat layout is 2 and an isle then 3 more seats.

The flight from Perth is about 2.5 hours however, our flight from Perth to Broome took only 2 hours... I think this was because we had a female pilot and we all know they're better drivers!! :o)

    Getting to Broome
You could drive to Broome but it is a very long way from Perth some 1200 miles away in fact. Some Broomites consider themselves more as territorians than West Aussies that is so far away it is!! I flew Qantas but there are other airlines such as Virgin which fly into Broome. Qantas has three flights into Broome on some days.

The flight is about 2 hours 15 minutes and is very pleasant. They do serve a small meal and a feature film is shown.
The best part of the flight however, is the scenery from the window. (see photos) There is no doubt once you fly across the land how ancient, dry and rugged Australia is.

My return ticket cost approximately $530.00

You can easily manage without your own transport in Broome, it's only a little place a few kilometres accross. When you look at the map you may think that you could easily walk eveywhere, but it's HOT and you won't walk as far as you think you can.
There are plenty of taxi's (use your moble phone, if from outside Australia get a local simcard for $30au) and you won't pay more than $10au a trip.
Or if you're travelling on a budget, there is a bus sevice every 1/2 hour during peak season, one for the day and another for the evening til after midnight.
Multirider tickets are availble to save you money.

    4WD's are popular
  • Tip Rating:
  • 4wd's are very popular for getting around as only just outside the town many roads change to dirt tracks, including the road to Grantheome point. You can take yor car down onto Cable beach to watch the sunset, that is if you don't mind wrecking it with salt.
There are several car hire places in the town.
NB, the company we hired our car from did not allow it to be taken on the beach.

    Walk or Bike
  • Tip Rating:
  • Getting around Broome is pretty easy. It's flat country so you can easy bike ride or walk to where ever you need to go locally. The roads are sealed but in some places they are hard red dirt.

    Town Bus
Broome, has a very good bus service picking up every half hour from most stops. The bus will take you to all the best parts of Broome, Chinatown, Cable Beach and the driver will point out hotels along the way as well as other points of interest.

    Getting around Broome
You may need more than a bus pass to visit all the sites some of which are quite spread apart and in the heat very uncomfortable to get to. These scooters cost $35 to hire pp but if you hire them for longer less. $25 for half the day.

    No motorbike licence required.

    Covenient bussing
There is a bus service to the main sites of Broome 7 days a week. It takes approximately one hour to do the round trip.

You can purchase a number of different tickets: from a single one way ticket $3.50(concession $1.50) to a 5 ride multi rider $16.00 (concession $6.50).The value-added day pass for $10.00 is well worth it whereby you can hop on and off as many times as you like from 7.10 am till 6.05pm.

The last bus leaves Cable Beach at 6.12pm.

From May until October there is an additional service from 8.40am- 4.40pm. Bus timetables are available at the visitor centre, on the bus and at some bus shelters.

    Taxi shuttle service
There is a taxi shuttle service from the airport to your hotel. $6.00 to the town centre, $7.50 to other areas. Given that the first thing that will hit you when you arrive will be the heat I believe the last thing you will want to do is walk it even if the airport is right in the middle of the town!!
