The Captain's Place
  • Tip Rating:
  • As you walk along Ocean Drive near the Pendal Street turnoff you may notice a small memorial plaque for "The Captain's Place" sitting alone in a grassed area overlooking the Indian Ocean.

If you were to stop and ask people passing by who this plaque is dedicated to I would suspect that many of them would not be able to tell you this.

Captain Bob Allsop was Harbour Master for the Port of Bunbury from 1963 - 1988. He lived in the house directly opposite from the plaque and tended the small patch of grass from where he would stand and observe the ever changing ocean.

As a gesture of appreciation for the Captain's services to the Bunbury Community this plaque was placed on the spot he spent so much time watching the ocean in it's many and everchanging moods.

The plaque itself isn't very a grand statement in but it is a small part of Bunbury's short history and you may want to gaze west from the same spot and enjoy the view.

A morning in the Maidens - the Peppermint Walk
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Maidens are a coastal dune nature reserve with well marked walk trails leading to the beach and there is also a shady BBQ area near the start.

The Peppermint Walk basically follows the road alongside Ocean Drive and takes you through coastal bushland with lovely stands of marri and peppermint trees.

These trails may not be as spectacular as those between Yallingup and Margaret River but they are a pleasant enough walk around especially during the wildflower season around September/October.

There's a lookout on top of the highest hill with a great 360 degree view over Bunbury and to the Indian Ocean.

    1606-2006 Duyfken Voyage
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1606 the original Dutch ship "Duyfken" set sail from Banda in Indonesia in search of gold and trade to the fabled island of Nova Guinea.

2006 marks the 400th anniversary of that voyage and to remind us of these intrepid traders this replica ship will sail from Fremantle in WA across the Great Southern Ocean up the east coast of Australia. The journey ends in Sydney at the end 2006.

Building the replica ship "Duyfken" was led by Fremantle community leader Michael G Kailis and a local historian Michael Young, who arranged a group that became known as the "Duyfken 1606 Replica Foundation" which is a charitable foundation.

This foundation constructed the ship in Fremantle at a cost of $3.7 million to help tell the story of Australia's first recorded European visitors.

The "Duyfken" is in Bunbury from the 8th until the 14th of April, 2006. For a gold coin donation you climb onboard and wander around to get a feel of what life may have been like for these ancient mariners.

I have also added a travelogue with some more pictures of the "Duyfken".

The Big Swamp is a natural but modified wetland area that attracts many birds. The water level of Big Swamp has been artificially kept high to enable the swamp to be a year round waterbird sanctuary.

There is now little resemblance to the original wetland which has been taken over by bamboo, bullrushes and other foreign species. In the growth among the pools are regular breeders such as ducks, black swans, coots and purple swamp hens.

Other visitors include cormorants, herons, ibises, spoonbills and seagulls. Some 70 bird species have been recorded and reptiles such as the long necked turtle and venomous tiger snakes are not uncommon.

Landfill has been carried out as part of a long term development plan which includes a lookout point and sheltered bird observation structures.

A walk/cycle track takes you around the circumference and there is also an elevated boardwalk through the swamp.

    Dalyellup
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dalyellup is a satellite suburb not too far down the road at the southern boundary of Bunbury and it promotes itself as a “Village, in a forest, by the sea”.

This small town actually falls within the boundary of the Shire of Capel, but for all intents and purposes to the people living there, they work and play in Bunbury.

During 2006, a walkway/cycleway was constructed to link Bunbury and Dalyellup. Cyclist would previously have travelled over a very busy stretch of highway but now have the option of a scenic route through a coastal bushland nature reserve.

I have also added a Dalyellup Travelogue with some more pictures.

    Tuart Walk
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Tuart Walk takes you from Bunbury’s southern most suburbs to the rapidly expanding, and relatively new satellite suburb of Dalyellup.

The Tuart Walk takes about 15 minutes to ride, meandering through a serene coastal bush nature reserve with attractive stands of Tuart trees and Peppermint Gums.

On any nice day, you will come across a lot of walkers and cyclist so take care while admiring the scenery.

The Bunbury entrance to the Tuart Walk is near Mosedale Avenue at the very end of Ocean Drive.

I was recently contacted by the TheWanderingCamel requesting a photo of the Greek Orthodox Parish of St Nicholas at 15 Forrest Street, Bunbury.

It is for the St Nicholas project which is compiling a gazeteer of photos of all the churches and buildings dedicated to the saint around the world.
