Ex-tensions On The Beach: Tasty fresh salads
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Ex-tensions On The Beach is right on the Back Beach which is Bunbury's most popular and safest beach.

Enjoy fresh salads, succulent seafood or a tender steak with great views of the Indian Ocean. The restaurant is fully licensed and has a good selection of local beer and wines.

The Caesar Salad with tender pieces of grilled chicken breast, crisp lettuce and other greens, seasoned croutons and a few slivers of anchovies is my favourite. The seafood crepes looked worth trying as well.

Green Jade: The best spring rolls in Bunbury
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Green Jade Asian Restaurant is owned and run by Wally Yip who has many years experience in Chinese restaurants. There was a time way back in the late 1960's when Bunbury had only two Chinese restaurants and Wally started one of them.

The food here is always fresh and well prepared. Some Chinese restaurants in Bunbury leave a lot to be desired but thankfully the Green Jade menu caters to local tastes without comprising qualityand freshness.

Good value set lunch menu for $8
    Dine-in or take away menu

I'm particularly partial to the home made spring rolls.

The Parade Hotel is right on the Leschenault Inlet with picturesque views to the city and white mangroves. You can easily walk there on the footpath all the way from the CBD.

It's a beautiful spot to relax with a drink or two, watch the boats on the Leschenault Inlet or seeing locals trying their luck at catching crabs.

And after watching the setting sun you can enjoy a blackboard meal which features fresh local fish, steaks or even a kangaroo fillet. All meals come with an all-you-can-eat-salad-bar which included a crisp green salad; Waldorf, bean or pasta salad with bread rolls.

I tried the kangaroo fillets crusted with native wattle seed and a sweet fig jus. Very tasty but the roo was just a little dry. Being a low fat meat it has to be cooked just right to retain the all natural juices.

Prince of Wales Hotel: Pub lunch
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you want to mix in with locals for a pub lunch head down to the Prince of Wales in Bunbury's CBD. Meals start from $10 for fish and chips to a $25 thick cut sirloin steak cooked just the way you like it. There's a self serve all-you-can-eat salad bar and also a good selection of local and imported beers and an extensive range of South West wines. You can order and pay for your meal and drinks at the front bar. The Prince of Wales was established in 1882 and apart from a lick of paint or two it has retained much of her original charm.

The Spicy Lamb Warm Thai Salad with tender strips of warm lamb marinated in a mild spicy Thai sauce with chillies and garlic with a fresh garden salad. All washed down with your favourite beverage from the the bar.

    Cost - $16.00

    Update 04/06/07 -

Not only can you get a reasonable pub lunch but the Prince of Wales also has an evening menu. So at a recent family gathering I tried the Grilled Snapper topped with Creamy Garlic Prawns served with french fries. Naturally you can help yourself to the all-you-can-eat salad bar.

    Cost - $21.00

Lighthouse Restaurant: Choice mouthwatering chargrilled aged eye fillet
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Lighthouse Restaurant overlooks the Indian Ocean by day and is the perfect spot to eat and watch the sun set in the west. At night you can view the city lights of Bunbury's CDB while wining and dining on local fresh produce and award winning South West wines. It is part of the Lighthouse Resort

Aged eye fillet chargrilled on sweet potato mousse, spinach and sultana salad, roast garlic and sticky beef jus with parmesan crisps.

I'll apologise in advance to my vegetarian friends and even to those meat eaters who prefer their meat dead. But I personally enjoy a mouthwatering "blue" steak if it's perfectly crisp and glistening on the outside and warmed right through. It was so tender I could have sliced through each tender morsel with my fingers. And I washed it down with a rich, ripe berry fruit Cabernet Merlot from Amberley Estate :~)

Jivin J's: Empty your wallet here
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Not far from the CBD and overlooking the sheltered waters of Leschenault Inlet is Jivin J's waterfront bar and eatery.

I stopped by for a hot coffee and a piece of cake one fine sunny winter's day to quench my thirst and to take a break from cycling around Bunbury.

But be warned... there were no prices on the menu and when it was time to settle the bill for two coffee's, two milkshakes and four pieces of cake it came to a whopping $56! I guess you gotta pay for the view and the ambience.

Jivin J's has recently changed ownership and now trades as Casellas Wine-Tapas-Grill at the same address.

Henrys Cafe Brasserie: Coffee and cake anyone?
  • Tip Rating:

  • Henrys Cafe Brasserie is a streetside cafe where you can sip hot coffee while munching on fresh cake and watch the locals go about their daily business.

They also serve all day breakfasts, light lunches and snacks. Henrys Cafe Brasserie is a licensed cafe so you can enjoy an ice cold beer or a quality local wine.

Coffee is around $3 per cup and meals are priced between $11-16.

Aunty Ria's Restaurant: Italian Food with a view
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Aunty Ria's Restaurant is beautifully located on the waterfront near the CBD overlooking the wide expanse of Koombana Bay.

The main fare is Italian with a good selection of entrees & starters and a typical array of main courses including Pesce (fish), Carne (meat) and Pollo (chicken). There are also pasta dishes and a variety of woodfired pizzas.

The selection of wines isn't extensive but more than acceptable for all wine tastes. Most of the wines are local and priced from $26.00 a bottle.

To finish off there are also cakes to tempt your sweet tooth with freshly brewed coffee to wash it down with.

Being a carne lover I really enjoyed the Koombana Beef which is a tender Scotch Fillet cooked exactly how you like it and is served with fresh prawns in a creamy port wine sauce.

I'm not a big fan of sauces particularly with rare meat because it detracts from the flavour of the natural juices so I simply asked them to serve mine without sauce. The bottle of Churchview Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was all the sauce I needed ;~)

Walkabout Café: True blue Aussie dining
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The first known VT meeting in Bunbury was held on a chilly Friday night on the 15th June 2007.

The occassion was to welcome imstress (Jen) and hubby, Basil to Bunbury in WA.

The Walkabout Café was the chosen venue for a bit of good ol' Aussie food and atmosphere.

Steaks are served as a half kilo cut of meat cooked to your liking. I wanted to give my good friends from Singapore a taste of good Aussie fare washed down with a glass of local red wine.

It was a real pleasure to sit down and "chew the fat" with a couple of good friends at a popular local eatery.

The restaurant is open 7 days a week from 11am for lunch right through till late for dinner and has it's own licensed bar with local beers and wines.

The steaks are cooked exactly to your liking and are served in half kilo portions with salad and chips. Medium to well cooked steaks take an extra half hour to cook so please take this into consideration when ordering.

I can highly recommend the 450g rare Pepper Steak which is a sirloin cut and coated with a crust of black peppercorns.

    Josephine's: Best value lunch menu
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Josephine's sets the standard for a really great value lunch.

The food is fantastic with most lunch specials priced at $14.50. The mains come with salad and chips.

The a la carte menu prices are roughly double compared to the day menu.

The restaurant is licensed with full bar facilities and a great beer and wine selection at pub prices.

I really enjoyed my Beef Parmigiana which was served with a generous portion of tender beef cutlets smothered in a rich tomato sauce and melted cheese topping.

And for dessert I topped up a the Crème brûlée which consisted of a rich custard topped with sugar caramelised under a blowtorch. This wa served with a sponge finger and freshly whipped cream.

That needed a long, strong machiatto to wash it all down with!
