Cicerellos: More Than Just a Fish N Chips Shop!

Cicerello's

Apart from the wide choice of seafood meals (and great fish n chips :-) the restaurant has a world class display of aquariums with over 50 species of marine life all caught in Fremantle waters.

The restaurant is large and comfortable and has indoor and outdoor tables. It also has an Upper Deck with tables where you can get a nice view of the Fishing Harbour and the ocean. I visited both Cicerello's of Mandurah and Fremantle and enjoyed both.

Favorite Dish: Fish n Chips...what else :-) I also tried the Dim Sims, potato cakes and chiko roll which were all great. The food is nice and fresh and perfectly cooked. They also have fresh fruit juices and a large selection of desserts. Their Cappuchino is wonderfully made...I've never seen anyone giving so much attention to a cup of coffee!

little creatures

A converted warehouse on the sea front in Freemantle, home to the strangely named Little Creatures Brewery. I was struck by the space and the open plan dining and drinking area, you sit at long tables and staring at the high ceilings for a while. Service is fast and friendly, there is a good wine list and a fantastic menu featuring the snack greats like nachos and pizzas cooked in a brick oven in front of you, there are also some classic dishes and great seafood as you would expect in this part of the world, we snacked out on nachos, olives and feta and chorizo and a selection of Little Creatures beers.
I returned in 2010 to find that the place has expanded, the main building is half as large again having moved into the unit next door & there is a much larger decked area out back over the water, this is served by it's own bar.

Cicerellos: Is It Really The Best Fish & Chips?

The Food Could Have Been Much Better

We were not sure of the location and had to stop an elderly lady who was walking her dog, for directions. She didn't sound local. Come to think about it, she might have been an Italian or something. Anyway, we should be talking about food here, and not about the sweet ol lady.

We needed to find our way to Cicerellos, reputed to be the number one fish and chips store in Fremantle. The lady though, felt that all three fish and chips store - Sweetlips and Kailis being the other two, were all about the same standard, though the costliest would be Cicerellos.

Unperturbed, we were on the hunt for the best.

Favorite Dish: We had a go at their Fish & Chips. The first un-service like thing I'd experienced was that we need to pay for our sauces - tomato and mayonnaise. Ok, we are pretty pampered back home as the restaurants allow you to take as much sauces as you would like to consume.

But the bearbug of everything was that the fish and chips were not even the nicest that we have tasted. I had good memories of Fremantle and its Fish & Chips but I've never had it this bad.

Even though they were using premium New Zealand Hoki Fish, the batter was soft and the fries were mushy. Maybe the weather was a little cooler but I don't think everything would have become soft and mushy within five minutes. Really not satisfying at all.

Fishermans Kitchen: Seafood in Fremantle
Chuckaziz profile photo

Fishermans Kitchen is just across the rail track

The food is average, service is fast and the price is reasonable. In short this place is value for money. The setting is a typical fast food restaurant but the only difference is that they serve seafood dishes. Cannot remember the rest of the menu they have because all I wanted was Fish & Chips and a can of coke.

Favorite Dish: Fish and Chips.

Cappuccino Strip

South Terrace, the main street in the heart of "Freo", is known as "Cappuccino Strip". Having a - guess what - here in one of the several street cafes is simply a must.

Favorite Dish: Cappuccino! I had mine accompanied by a piece of excellent, rich chocolate cake served with vanilla icecream.

Caapuccino Strip, South Terrace, Fremantle,WA.

This restaurant has been aruond for ever. It was just sold, but retained most of the original staff. And the menu stayed the same. Why change something if it isn't broken.
The food is rustic and consistantly good.
Generally there are no reservations, just line up. They feed you garlic bread in line to keep you happy. If you don't want to wait, get in early.

Favorite Dish: Pizza, Calamari, Chilli Mussels.

The Markets foodhall: Cheap but good.

The outside area of the foodhall

This is not a luxurious restaurant with selubrious decor etc, but a very popular cheap eating place.
If you're not familiar with this type of foodhall, it's a dozen or so little stalls inside a large hall which all share the tables in the middle. The furnishings are basic and the table close together, but there is also an outside area in the street with shady trees which is quite pleasant.(see photo)
There is a variety of cuisines including Asian, Japanese, Italian and Indian.
Between 12 and 2 it will be very crowed and noisy. You will have to queue at the stalls to place your order (there's always a long queue at the Japanese stall.)
Good for a late lunch (when it's not so busy) after spending all your money in the shops.
NB
It's only open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and closes at 5pm.

Favorite Dish: I love the teriaki fish from the Japanese stall. A lovely piece of white fish in tempura batter with teriake sauce, served with rice and a little salad for only $6.50au. For 50c extra you can have a bowl of miso soup as well. My daughter tried the tempura mix with oodon noodles in soup, that was good too. These portions are not large, but quite adequate for lunch,
If you want a large plateful, try the 'combination' from one of the Asian stalls where you can have a spoonful of 10 or so different dishes on the one plate for about $10au.

several resto along the jetty and essex street: fish and chips to waffle and coffee

essex restaurant (c) ukirsari

what do you want to have during visit freo? you can choose lots of eateries that served by cafes and restaurants. especially in old freo.

- for locals fave, fish and chips, go to the jetty and find several resto in there. one of them is jack's shack. for tomato and ketchup, you need to order. but vinegar and salt are available on the table. it's around AUD$25 per dish, not included drink.

- for delicious savoury and sweet pastries, you can find it at fremantle market. also kinds of bread and whole grain wheat bread [such as made in new norcia, called new norcia sourdough]. it's AUD$3.60 for savoury pastry and AUD$6.50 for the bread. also have tea and coffee and several kind of meals [including noodles] in the market.

- for waffle cafe, pizza, seafood and romantic dining, essex street is an option. not so far from fremantle market.

Favorite Dish: my fave from the market is spinach and ricotta cheese pie and fish and chips at the jetty nearby freo fishing harbour.

Joe's fish shack: All things fishy
stedeb profile photo
stedeb 225 reviews

We always enjoy our visits to Joe's which sits right on the harbour with great views but it can get hot in the summer sitting by the window. The decor is old fishing shack with tables and chairs from the 50's. The service is good and the menu pretty extensive and caters for other taste apart from seafood.

Favorite Dish: Their menu has such things as seafood, chargrills, seafood platters, pastas, salads & sides plus a dessert menu. Try the sticky date pudding which is big enough to share. My choice is either the Coral Bay King Snapper or Barramundi Fillets both served with chips & coleslaw my husband favours the Char Grilled Tasmanian Salmon served with mashed potato & vegetables. I know some people have not had the same experience as we have but we have always enjoyed our meals here. The service is good and there is an extensive beverage list. We have always felt it has been money well spent.

Q:  I'm curious to know if anybody knows the opening times and costs of the wheel? Thanks

A: Walked past it yesterday, looks good but did not check price. As holiday season in Perth including school holidays I would expect it to be operating by 9am.
