There are 3 ways to get to Fremantle from Perth besides driving:

    1) By train - catch an electric train from Perth Central Station to Fremantle. The trip takes less than half an hour.

    2) By bus - Transperth buses leave from various stands in St George's Terrace and will take you to Fremantle via either the Canning or Stirling Highway.

    3) By ferry - catch a ferry from the Barrack Street Jetty in Perth and enjoy the sights from the Swan River as you cruise to Fremantle.

I caught the train, just for the fun of it. It was A$2.80 one way circa 2001.

Getting around Fremantle: Walk or CAT

  • Fremantle is pretty small to get around. You can walk to most sights. However, if you really feel tired or felt walking is beneath you, fret not. The free Fremantle CAT buses to the rescue.

The Fremantle Clipper completes a circuit around the city of Fremantle stopping at popular places of interest, offering easy access to major attractions and venues. The service is fully accessible with vehicle kneeling action at the curbside, driver activated ramp and low floor design, with the added comfort of fully air-conditioned vehicles.

Buses have been coordinated with train arrivals and departures.

Frequency of the CAT service - every 15 minutes.

The parking ticket system is mostly around the Fremantle area so look for the ticket boxes. The length of time varies depending on the street/area and there is a maximum in some places of only half an hour. Check before you start putting your coins in. The ticket you receive will show your allotted time for leaving the pace. You need to put this on your dashboard in easy view.

Driving around Fremantle is fairly easy but there are quite a few one way streets. There is plenty of parking which are either 2 hour free parking buildings, street parking with a meter or sectioned off parking which is by a ticket system whereby you put your coins in for a certain amount of time and receive a ticket which you place on your dashboard. Most things are within walking distance so its best to park your car and just walk.

  • The city centre of Fremantle is small and very easy to get around on foot, however, if you're tired or don't have much time to spare, then the Fremantle CAT service is what you need. The service does a complete circle around the city and stops at the most popular spots.

Mondays to Fridays it runs every 10 minutes between 7.30am and 6.30 pm. Weekends and public holidays (accept for Good Friday, Christmas and Boxing Day) it runs every 10 minutes from 10.00am to 6.30pm.

This link provides a route mapwhich shows you all the bus stop locations. The Fremantle CAT service is run by Southern Coast Transit.

(Sorry, no pic, I will just have to go back and get one!)
