The Stirling Range National Park is just south of Gnowangerup. The range of mountains was first discovered in 1802 by Captain Matthew Flinders who was visiting the southern coast on the HMS Investigator but was not named until 1935 by John Septimus Row after Capt James Stirling. Stirling was the first Govenor of Western Australia.
