Zuytdorp Restaurant & Jakes Bistro: Tour Lunch

We had lunch at Jake's Bar in the Zuytdorf restaurant (named after a Dutch ship). Some time in June 1712, the 700 ton ship Zuytdorp wrecked on the Western Australian coast crashing onto rocks at the bottom of cliffs just south of Shark Bay. The cliffs are now called the Zuytdorp Cliffs. In 1927 a stockman discovered the survivor's campsite at the top of the cliffs. He found silver coins and some artifacts but no signs of human remains. It was another 30 years before it was realized that this was indeed the wreck site of the Zuytdorp.

The bus driver said that the place he usually took people had gone out of business and no other place would cater to the bus groups.

Favorite Dish: We had a choice of vegetarian curry (only 3 people took this), fish and chips (my granddaughter took that), or steak (which I took). The fish and chips looked good. My steak was tasty

Casual Alfresco dining

This is alfresco (or indoors) fine dining with sweeping views of the Murchison River across the road. The Black Rock Cafe has excellent meals including fresh locally caught seafood.

It is a fully licensed restaurant with a good WA wine and beer list and they are open for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Finlay's Fish BBQ: True Aussie dining

Outdoor dining

Finlay's Fish BBQ is a famous tourist attraction of Kalbarri and is well known for a friendly atmosphere and a good selection of locally caught seafood at great prices.

The setting is outdoors and there is no service to speak of. You bring along your own grog and glasses but it is a fantastic place for an Aussie style meal.

They cook your meat to your liking and you just help yourself to the all you can eat salad bar.

Finlay's is open daily 11:30am to 2pm and 5:30 to 8:30pm.

Favorite Dish: I recommend that you don't leave Kalbarri without checking out Finlay's Fish BBQ.

The BBQ offers a variety of locally caught fresh fish such as pink snapper, Spanish mackerel, sweet lip and yellow fin tuna. Other fishy items on the menu include crayfish, prawns, octopus and, from New Zealand, mussels, oyster and squid.

At Finlay's, you can enjoy a fresh pink snapper meal for $12.50 but if you don't eat fish then there is also WA honey beef available.

Finlay's is a bit out of the way as it is located in an old ice works shed in Kalbarri's light industrial area.

Black Rock Cafe

There are plenty of good eating venues in Kalbarri, Open daily from 7 am til late the Black Rock Cafe gives very good service and quality whether its breakfast, snack or evening dinner with great views over the bay. Head chef/manager was born about 10k from where I live, we went over how it used to be before he left for oz 30 years ago, small world? Jakes Bistro offer good food and service at a very good price can get busy at peak times. There are also specialist dining places, fish, Chinese, Mexican and European plus take away/eat in cafes.

Favorite Dish: No paticular favourite as I enjoyed all the dishes I tried.
