    The Indian Pacific
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Indian Pacific passes Kalgoorlie on its 4352 km long journey from Sydney to Perth.
I took the train from Adelaide to Kalgoorlie and enjoyed the trip a lot. Just had a place in the "cheap" seater section, but it was comfy enough for me. There's a lot of legroom, the seats do recline and there's even a shower in the carriage!
I had to change the date on my ticket and was pleasantly surprised that it was done without any problems nor a fee!
Before buying your ticket, get a YHA (Youth Hostel Association)card. It saved me 50%!

Transwa is probably WA's best regional transport provider linking many regional centres by train or coach services.

The "Australind" train provides a quick and efficient twice daily rail link between Perth and Bunbury and the "Prospector" train between Perth and Kalgoorlie.

Transwa also operates coach services to places such as Kalbarri in the north, Esperance in the south-east and Albany & Augusta in the south.

Travelling Perth to Kalgoorlie by train will take you over the Darling Range. The Indian Pacific runs twice a week from Perth to Adelaide and Sydney and stops in Kalgoorlie. There is also a less expensive way on the Prospector service with Transwa which runs daily to Kalgoorlie and return. The trip takes about 7 ¾ hours. The train station sits on Forrest Street with the Railway Hotel opposite.

    Driving
Kalgoorlie is around 600km east of Perth. It will take you around 7 hours driving along the Great Eastern Hwy. It is a long and boring road at times and for the last 100kms, you should make sure you fill up because there is a long stretch after Southern Cross where there is no opportunity to find gas.

    Mining Hall of Fame
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the place to visit if you want to learn more about mining.
You can tour an old underground goldmine and try to wash your own gold. I wouldn't have been too successful in this, soon lost my patience in the sun with all the flies around.
There museum has a large collection of different minerals and a gallery to the most prominent prospectors.

The Mining Hall of fame is open from 9am to 4.30pm daily and admission is 24 AU$ for the full tour.

    Museum of the Goldfields
  • Tip Rating:
  • The museum is the place to learn about the history of Kalgoorlie and to admire a lot of gold in their underground vault. Of course you also can marvel at artefacts from the days of the goldrush and learn that Kalgoorlie is also an important producer of Sandalwood!
A huge headframe stands in front of the museum, you can go up there and enjoy excellent views over the town.
The museum is open from 10am to 4.30pm and admission is by donation

    Super Pit Lookout
  • Tip Rating:
  • To see how gold is mined these days, go to the Super Pit lookout. The Fimiston Mine is the largest open cut mine in Australia and it's still growing. When finished it will be 3,8km long, 1,35km wide and 500m deep and is suppossed to produce 300 tonnes of gold until its lifespan is thought to run out in 2018.
It's really impressing watching those giant trucks appearing like toys.
The lookout is open from 7am-9pm. Contact the tourist centre in Kalgoorlie for info about the blast times.
