The Grand Hotel is one of the historic bars in Kalgoorlie and has a skimpies bar. The hotel was built in 1896 and was Hannan Street’s first permanent hotel with 16 bedrooms and a billiard room and was fitted out with furniture from Adelaide. The first private telephone in the town was also installed in the hotel in 1987. The owner had a large ice box installed and then had ice trucked over every day from Coolgardie.
The Kalgoorlie Hotel has a restaurant which serves a mediterrean as well as moden cuisine. They also have wood-fired pizzas. Judds Restaurant is quite a favourite and overlooks Hannan Street. There is foxtel and pool tables as well as a TAB. The hotel was built in 1896 in a federation stile and has undergone major rennovations.
The York Hotel was built in 1900 and is quite a unique design. Inside there is a dark wood carved central staircase which is really quite beautiful. During the 70’s the hotel was set to be demolished and form part of a large new hotel which encompassed the old Oriental Hotel as well (since demolished). Fortunately common sense in preservation prevailed. The York Hotel is still there in all its old world charm. There is a public bar on the ground floor.
Another bordello that is in operation in Kalgoorlie’s Red Light district is Langtrees 181. Unlike Questa Casa, the look of this brothel is upmarket and each room has a particular theme which relates to the lives of prostitutes who once worked the area. You can also take a tour either at 1.00pm, 3.00pm or 6.00pm which takes you through Kalgoorlies history of the sex industry.. There is a special Madam’s Tour at 5.00pm on Tuesdays. Again you must be over 18yrs.
Questa Casa (or the Pink House) is reported to be one of the ‘World’s Oldest Working Brothels’. It is also is supposed to be the only brothel that has the famous ‘Starting Stalls’. This area was where the girls first started a conversation with the men although conversation was not always all that was going on.
The brothel was build over 100 years ago and was the first in Kalgoorlie. If you are over 18yrs of age, you can take a 1 and a half hour tour of the brothel and see the working areas of the house and get an insight into not only life in the brothel but also see how in this tin shed type construction, how cold it was in winter and how hot it must have been in the summer months. The are 11 doors to the building with a big sign saying “Yes We Are Open’.
The historic Federal Hotel was built in 1899 and is one of 25 still operating. At one time it was briefly called the Royal Hotel and it operated primarily for Loop-line rail passengers. As with quite a few pubs in Kalgoorlie and Boulder, you will see advertisements which mention Skimpies bars. This is a term for scantily dressed bar staff.
In Paddy’s Ale House you can not only find over 20 brands of beer on tap but also multi-screen TV’s for special sporting events, live music and dance music 6 days a week and traditional Irish, Australia and American styled food. You can eat anytime.
